Even our NSW pollies were young once.
When Premier Gladys Berejiklian tweeted a picture of herself at 20 dressed in a Superwoman outfit, The Sauce decided to round up the rest of our state’s MPs to see what they looked like back in the day.
Some, like the premier, and her rival Labor leader Jodi McKay have hardly changed at all. However, as you will see, others are barely recognisable.
The son of Italian immigrants, the Queanbeyan-born John Barilaro stayed in his local area where he has been a football coach and local councillor. He is now the state’s Deputy Premier.
This carefree looking 20-year-old would go on to become a highly successful lawyer before working as the chief-of-staff for a NSW attorney-general.
It is NSW Finance Minister Damien Tudehope
With his tousled hair and a gaze that has a touch of “blue steel” about it, this 20-year-old commerce law graduate would go on to fulfil one of the toughest jobs in the state.
It is Treasurer Dom Perrottet, who has adopted a more intellectual look (although reckon he could still pull off a “blue steel” if he wanted.
Looking like the poster boy for the surf-lifesaving movement, this 20-year-old Church of England Grammar School graduate went on to complete a Master of Laws and PhD at Macquarie University before later becoming a policy adviser to former Liberal premier John Brogden.
It is Planning and Public Spaces Minister Rob Stokes, who is still often found on the beach near his home in his Pittwater electorate.
This 20-year-old went on to become senior minister in the Berejiklian government. Not that he knew this would be his destiny when this photograph was taken, The mystery minister is pictured here the night before he embarked on a Contiki tour through Europe.
It is none other than Police and Emergency Services Minister David Elliott, who said he still remembers the Contiki tour vividly.
“Boy oh boy did that teach a working class kid from the western suburbs a thing or too.”
Pictured here at his 21st birthday, this former Saint Ignatius’ College Riverview graduate handsome worked in the electorate office of then prime minister John Howard before later embarking on his own political career.
We don’t think Counter Terrorism and Corrections Minister Anthony Roberts has changed much.
Back when he had hair. This 20-year-old future Liberal powerbroker is pictured here with his “first love” Wendy Quinn and the woman who would become his fiance after their romance was rekindled two decades after they first met in a pub.
The smile should have given it away. It is Energy and Environment Minister Matt Kean
Looking like a leading man in a Hollywood film, this future MP is pictured here with his future wife Cheryl at a mate’s 21st.
There’s still a touch of Robert Redford about him. It is Shooters MLC Rob Borsak who is pictured here celebrating his 40-year wedding anniversary with his wife Cheryl.
