A Top End man was rushed to hospital after being run-over by a truck at a Wishart business on Tuesday afternoon.

The 30-year-old worker was performing maintenance underneath the vehicle around 3.30pm, when his activity disabled the handbrake, causing the truck to roll, dragging him across concrete for about eight metres.

St John Ambulance said the man suffered severe crush injuries to his chest and abdomen.

He was transported to hospital, where he remains in a serious condition.

NT WorkSafe said inspectors had attended the scene and an enquiry was underway, with preliminary findings indicating the truck had been parked on a slight decline without the wheels choked.

“A worker was underneath the truck performing maintenance work when their activity disabled the handbrake and caused the truck to roll forward,” a spokesperson said.

“NT WorkSafe reminds all businesses and workers working on vehicles or other moveable items of plant to check that safeguards are in place to ensure the vehicle or plant does not unexpectedly move and cause injury.”

The purpose of NT WorkSafe’s enquires is to understand the cause of an incident and determine the appropriate course of action.

If an incident or complaint has resulted from businesses or organisations not understanding their work health and safety obligations, WorkSafe Inspectors will work with them and provide information and advice.

If WorkSafe Inspectors find more systemic issues, including uncontrolled risks within the workplace, Inspectors will issue notices to direct the business or organisation to comply with safety standards under our legislative framework.

If it is determined that a serious incident could have resulted from potential breaches of duty under the work health and safety laws, NT WorkSafe will commence an investigation.
