A popular Magnetic Island track has been reopened following $1.35 million worth of works were completed.
The 2km walking track links Horseshoe Bay with Balding Bay and Radical Bay in Magnetic Island National Park.
The works conducted included improving drainage to create better traction for walkers and help protect the natural area from erosion, with the steps being rebuilt using 100 tonne of natural stone to maintain the track’s character.
The upgrades were completed as part of the Queensland Government Revitalising National Parks Program and the joint Australian-Queensland Government Reef Joint Field Management Program.
Department of Environment, Science and Innovation deliver the works in collaboration with Wulgurukaba traditional owners and Cannonvale company Dirtscapes.
Member for Townsville Scott Stewart said with almost 300,000 people visiting the island each year it was important to ensure the tracks are safe and comfortable for walkers.
“Experiencing Magnetic Island on foot is the best way to connect with the unique landscape, which provides habitat for a healthy koala population among eucalypt forests and coastal surrounds,” he said.
“By offering a state-of-the-art walking experience, we are fostering the connection between visitors and the island while safeguarding this important area for future generations.”
