It will be a family affair for the Finch family the when the chutes and gates clang open to raging bulls, bucking broncos and barrel racing horses at as this year’s Bartlett Park Rodeo on Saturday.
While Lisa Finch will competing in the barrel races, her son Dallon will be trying to ride 8 seconds on bucking bulls and also taking a leap of faith for the first time competing in the steer wrestling and team roping events.
From Black River, Mrs Finch said she had been competing at Bartlett Park Rodeo for the past 20 years while son started aged 5 riding the poddy calves and has now worked his way up to competing in bull riding events across Australia.
“It’s always a great family atmosphere and good competitors,” she said.
“Dallon competes in bull riding. That’s his main love, and but he’s just started steer wrestling and loves it.”
Dallon was hoping for a couple of wins on Saturday and said he would not be on the bull riding circuit if it had not been for the annual Barlett Park Rodeo.
“I think I’ve honestly done nearly everything about rodeo on here. I’ve started here when I was little, till now,” he said.
Rodeo secretary Evelyn Dobbins said Bartlett Park said there would be a full rodeo program on this Saturday
“We’ve got everything from the steers for the kids, to the bulls, the broncos and the barrel racing,” she said.
She said gates open at 10am with the main performance at 6pm. There are no tickets sold at the gate but to buy click here.
Extreme Steer Wrestling Australia will be coming to Townsville for the first time featuring some of the best competitors in the country as a free event at Bartlett Park this Friday night.
Townsville’s Luke Ford has been steer wrestling for 8 years first started competing at Bartlett Park as an 8 year old and is helping to organise the Extreme Steer Wrestling event.
He said Friday night’s steer wrestling and breakaway roping event was one of several popular steer wrestling competitions around the country.
“Steer wrestling is where the competitor and another rider called a hazer either side of a box (small enclosure. You ride run out of the time event box, and there’s a 400 kilo, 300 kilo steer in the middle with horns, and you’ve got to slide off your horse (at full gallop) grab the steer by its horns and wrestle it to the ground,” he said.
The free Extreme Steer Wrestling event kicks off at Bartlett Park at 6am on Friday night.
