LG unveils Signature Series OLED TV R, a ‘disappearing’ roll-up TV

The tech giant has given a first look at one of its most game-changing innovations yet: a TV that slides into a sleek sideboard when you’re not using it.

Imagine having a TV that disappears when you are finished watching your favourite programs.

That is what LG has unveiled with its innovative roll-up TV at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Dubbed the Signature Series OLED TV R, the 65-inch television (165cm) slides out of a modern-looking sideboard when you want to use it. With the push of a button it will rise up to full screen in 10 seconds and with hardly any noise.

It’s also versatile, allowing users to select “line view”, which displays about a quarter of the TV and offers music, a clock, weather updates, access to your photos and a home dashboard, allowing you to interact with other smart appliances in the home.

“Since the start of the modern era, television screen sizes have steadily increased in size as resolution improved and consumers demanded a more immersive viewing experience. The trade-off came in the form of a large, black rectangle that dominated the room when the TV was not in use,” LG said in a statement.

“Even more advanced projection TVs have never been able to deliver the contrast or the deep blacks that consumers demanded. In an effort to make large TVs less conspicuous, manufacturers have been racing to create even slimmer screens, focusing on designs that were as unobtrusive as possible.”

Angus Jones, General Manager of Marketing at LG told News Corp Australia the rollable TV would be available in Australia in the second half of this year but a price has not been determined. However, it is expected to be quite expensive when it is first rolled out.

LG has tested the roll-up TV up to 50,000 times, meaning that if you turned it on or off eight times a day it would last 17 years.

The Signature Series OLED TV R was one of two TVs LG launched at the CES.

The other being its 88-inch (223.5 cm) 8k OLED which offers not only a great picture but also in-built sound that means you do not need to buy speakers.

LG said its TVs were getting smarter and would include Alexa voice controls this year in addition to the existing Google Assistant. The company is also adding Apple’s Airplay 2 for easy media playback or device mirroring.
