Kingsley Alley Jr trial: Melissa Clancy, Madison Butler, Dechlan Wurramarra and teen found guilty

A young Palmerston teenager who pleaded with his killers, begging his “brother” for mercy, has finally found justice with a single word: “guilty”.

Latest, Thursday, November 28: A young Palmerston teenager who pleaded with his killers, begging his “brother” for mercy, has finally found justice with a single word: “guilty”.

Following a month of evidence it took a Supreme Court jury only 10 hours to convict Madison Butler, Melissa Clancy, Dechlan Wurramarra and an unnamed teenager for Kingsley Alley Jr’s murder in the early hours of October 8, 2022.

As each unanimous “guilty” verdict was read on Wednesday, the young man’s family gave a sigh of relief from the court gallery.

Across four weeks of evidence the jury heard the four killers’ motive was sparked with a fight in an Uber, a spilt drink, a missing purse and a drunken insult.

Mr Alley was with a group who were rejected by an Uber driver because he refused to take all five passengers as they left his best friend’s birthday party.

This blew up into a heated argument, where the 18-year-old assaulted the driver and the unnamed teenager, splashed a drink in Butler’s face and called her a “s--t”.

After Mr Alley walked off, Butler and the teenager were picked up by Wurramarra, her mother Clancy, and her father Leslie Butler.

Mr Butler is not accused of any wrongdoing.

The prosecution argued a revenge plan was cooked up in the car, with all four agreeing to deal out “payback” on the drunk teenager.

When they spotted Mr Alley in the street, Butler, Wurramarra and the teen jumped out.

Madison Butler (left) her mother Melissa Jane Clancy, 37 (centre), and Dechlan Wurramarra, 20, and a 17-year-old boy (not pictured) were all charged after Kingsley Alley Jr’s body was found bloodied and beaten on a Palmerston driveway on October 8.

Wurramarra was already armed with a knife, while Butler and the teen made “improvised weapons” with metal poles, and threw bottles and rocks.

The trio hunted Mr Alley down the street, with the jury shown the blood trail as he ran from his attackers as he pleaded for mercy.

“Please, please,” he allegedly said to his killers.

“Look brother, look,” he called out as the blood seeped from a pierced artery.

The young father’s bloodied and beaten body was found at sunrise, abandoned on a stranger’s driveway.

Due to their direct involvement in the fatal assault, all three were found guilty of his murder.

Clancy was condemned over 13 words she reportedly yelled out to encourage the young attackers as they beat Mr Alley to death.

“Kill him, get him” and “kill him Maddy, double-bank him, all of youse,” Clancy yelled out.

Her barrister David Edwardson had argued Clancy had actually tried to call her daughter back from the fight and she later told police: “I didn’t want her being involved in whatever”.

The only person who reported hearing the mum yell this out had recanted most of her evidence during the trial, saying she was no longer certain if the voice was male or female, or was even inside or outside the car.

Melissa Jane Clancy was aged 37 at the time of the murder.

In their ruling the jury concluded that Clancy had encouraged the attack and was part of a “callous pact” to attack the teenager.

Justice Peter Barr adjourned the sentencing hearings until January 22 next year, to allow each of the four defence teams time to prepare their submissions.

‘Wound up like a firecracker’: Alleged Palmo killers launch defence

Earlier - Thursday, November 21: Four alleged killers have dismissed claims they formed a “callous pact” in a “grand conspiracy” to hunt down and savage an 18-year-old Palmerston man.

In their closing arguments the barristers for Madison Butler, Melissa Clancy, Dechlan Wurramarra and an unnamed teenager maintained their clients were not guilty of the murder of Kingsley Alley Jr in the early hours of October 8, 2022.

Over the course of three weeks a Supreme Court jury has heard allegations the young man was “pursued” through the street by the armed trio, as Ms Clancy yelled out “kill him” from a waiting vehicle.

Prosecutor James Moore alleged the savage violence was “payback”, after Mr Alley threw a drink in Ms Butler’s face during an argument in an Uber.

Palmerston man Kingsley Alley Jr was just 18 when he was allegedly murdered by four people in Driver in the early hours of October 8, 2022.
Palmerston man Kingsley Alley Jr was just 18 when he was allegedly murdered by four people in Driver in the early hours of October 8, 2022.

But over two days the defence has told the jury this account was “cherry picking” the evidence, exaggerated a conspiracy for violence, and ignored that Mr Alley was “wound up like a firecracker” when leaving his best friend’s birthday barbecue.

The teenager’s defence barrister Moya O’Brien said Mr Alley swung a whiskey bottle at an Uber driver in an “outright, unprovoked violent assault”, and then fought her client in the street.

After the scuffle was broken up the jury heard Mr Alley was told to “calm down and walk it off”, while Ms Butler and the teenager were picked up in a car with the co-accused Ms Clancy and Mr Wurramarra in the back seat, O'brien told the court.

The court was told someone in the car yelled out “stop” when they caught up to Mr Alley walking alone, and Ms Butler, Mr Wurramarra and the teen jumped out.

It was alleged Mr Wurramarra was armed with a knife, while Ms Butler and the teen made “improvised weapons” with metal poles, and threw bottles and rocks.

Mr Moore argued a recording captured them screaming: “Get him”, “I’ll f—k you up”, and “I’m going to stab you again brother”.

But given the poor quality of the recording and absence of expert analysis, all four barristers said it was not possible to blindly accept the crown’s take on what was said.

Quoting Simon and Garfunkel, Ms Butler’s defence lawyer David Hallowes told the jury “a man hears what he wants to hear, and disregards the rest”.

Both Mr Hallowes and Ms O’Brien said their clients were not active participants in the “moving brawl” between Mr Wurramarra and Mr Alley.

“(The teen) was hanging back, it was not his fight and he was not involved,” she said.

Mr Wurramarra ’s barrister Jon Tippett said while his client may have been in the thick of it, he was fighting for his life after Mr Alley “came at him with a bottle”.

“The prosecution has not proved beyond a reasonable doubt that Mr Wurramarra was not defending himself in the middle of Driver Avenue, from a man armed with the neck of a bottle that could tear his throat out,” Mr Tippett said.

Mr Tippett said his client never intended to kill Mr Alley with “one thrust of a knife”, saying he did not realise he caused a fatal blow.

“It was a shambolic event that was spontaneous and pregnant with stupidity and ignorance,” he said.

While it was agreed Ms Clancy did not leave the car or physically assault Mr Alley, Mr Moore alleged she screamed out “instructions” to her young co-accused: “Kill him, get him” and “kill him Maddy, double-bank him all of youse”.

Ms Clancy’s barrister David Edwardson said the implications the 37-year-old mother was the “brainchild” of a “grand conspiracy” was “absolute rubbish”.

Mr Edwardson said the entire case around Ms Clancy — which threatened to put her away for the rest of her life — relied on a single witness who had recanted everything.

The neighbour told the jury she was no longer certain if the voice was male or female, or was even inside or outside the car.

Mr Edwardson said the attempt to “justify” the murder charge was “absurd, disingenuous, and quite frankly deeply troubling”.

“Before you condemn anyone by their words, whether be they by tape or alleged by witness, you must be absolutely sure,” he said.

It was alleged all of them, except Mr Wurramarra, returned to the scene at 3.55am, with the teenager seen checking Mr Alley’s body for a pulse.

Ms O’Brien said the teenager’s distraught reaction — crying, dry retching as he left the body — showed this was never a “cold blooded transaction” or a “callous” plot.

“It (was) a boy who had discovered the unfathomable, and was checking to see if there was any hope,” Ms O’Brien said.

“He never intended for it to end up like this.”

The jury will return on Monday to hear directions from Justice Peter Barr.

Palmo teen allegedly beaten to death as ‘payback’

UPDATE Tuesday, November 19: A drunken insult, a missing purse and a spilt drink signed a Palmerston teenager’s death warrant to his four killers, a crown prosecutor has argued to a Darwin jury.

After three weeks of Supreme Court hearings, prosecutor James Moore alleged 18-year-old Kingsley Alley Jr was “pursued” through the streets and beaten to death as “payback” following the chaotic end of his best friend’s party on the evening of October 7, 2022.

Melissa Jane Clancy, 39, her 20-year-old daughter Madison Butler, Dechlan Wurramarra, 22, and a teenager – who cannot be named — have all pleaded not guilty to the 18-year-old’s murder.

Madison Butler, 18, left, Butler’s mother Melissa Jane Clancy, 37, Dechlan Wurramarra, 20, and a 17-year-old boy (not pictured) were all charged after Kingsley Alley Jr’s body was found bloodied and beaten on a Palmerston driveway on October 8.

Throughout the lengthy trial, the jury heard the incident started after an Uber driver kicked out five passengers, including Mr Alley, Ms Butler and the teenager, who tried to squeeze into his car.

In his closing arguments Ms Butler’s barrister David Hallowes said Mr Alley called the driver a “f—king dog” and assaulted him.

Mr Hallowes said when Ms Butler told Mr Alley to get out, he called her a “sl—t” and threw his drink in her face before they were all kicked out of the car.

Mr Moore alleged the teenager initiated a fight with Mr Alley, but Mr Hallowes said it was Mr Alley who yelled out he was going to “kill” and “smash” the younger boy.

Mr Hallowes said Mr Alley could “flick like a switch” and “flare up”, while his friend Kodey Gundersen said he simply told the drunk teenager to “calm down and walk it off”.

Mr Moore alleged the motive to murder was born from this frenzied interaction and Ms Butler’s incorrect assumption that Mr Alley stole her wallet.

“I’m going to get Kingsley for what he did,” Ms Butler allegedly said.

Madison Butler, 18, was charged with the murder of an 18-year-old man whose body was found outside a vacant home at Driver, on Saturday October 8.
Madison Butler, 18, was charged with the murder of an 18-year-old man whose body was found outside a vacant home at Driver, on Saturday October 8.

But Mr Hallowes said it was not reasonable to believe this would inspire a conspiracy to murder.

“If someone spilt a drink on me, I might be upset, I might be angry — it doesn’t mean my reaction will be ‘I’m going to kill that person’,” Mr Hallowes said.

The jury heard Ms Butler and the teenager were picked up in a car with the co-accused Ms Clancy and Mr Wurramarra in the back seat.

While driving the jury heard someone spotted the lone, intoxicated Mr Alley walking on the street, and called out “stop”.

It was alleged the three young co-accused stepped out of the car, Mr Wurramarra armed with a knife, while Ms Butler and the teen made “improvised weapons” with metal poles, and threw bottles and rocks.

Mr Wurramarra said Mr Alley was the aggressor, and “came at him with a bottle”, but Mr Moore said these self defence arguments were “nonsense”.

Mr Moore said audio recordings appeared to capture screams, yells and chaos of the “savagery” as Mr Alley begged for mercy.

“I’ll f—k you up, mother f—ker,” Mr Moore alleged Ms Butler said.

“Get him,” the teen allegedly yelled.

“I’m going to stab you again brother,” Mr Wurramarra allegedly told his victim.

Mr Moore alleged the trio then got into the car which was “conveniently waiting for them” and left Mr Alley to “bleed to death”.

He said Ms Butler, Ms Clancy and the teenager “did everything they could to point the finger” at Mr Wurramarra — the man left holding the knife — but alleged they had all agreed to kill or seriously harm Mr Alley.

Throughout the alleged fatal assault, it was agreed Ms Clancy did not leave the car nor physically assault Mr Alley.

Mr Moore alleged she screamed out “instructions” to her young co-accused: “Kill him, get him” and “kill him Maddy, double-bank him all of youse”.

However Ms Clancy told police she instead was calling out her daughter’s name, saying “I didn’t want her being involved in whatever”.

Mr Moore alleged all of them, except Mr Wurramarra, returned to the scene at 3.55am, checking the body for a pulse and collecting the evidence: a bloodied knife, a hat and sunglasses.

The jury heard as the teenager returned from the scene he was dry retching, crying and “appeared distraught”.

Ms Clancy, Mr Wurramarra and the teenager’s defence teams will deliver their closings on Wednesday, before Justice Peter Barr gives his directions to the jury.

‘Blood on his hands’: Mum, daughter recount alleged Palmo murder

Friday, November 8: A call from a crying daughter allegedly sparked a chain of events leading to a young Palmerston man being hunted down and killed in the street, a jury has heard.

Melissa Jane Clancy, 39, her 20-year-old daughter Madison Butler, Dechlan Wurramarra, 22, and a teenager – who cannot be named — have all pleaded not guilty to Kingsley Alley Jr’s murder on October 8, 2022.

On Friday the Supreme Court jury watched the recorded police interviews of the alleged murderous mother daughter duo, as they maintained they never touched the 18-year-old.

Ms Butler told police that hours before his death a drunk Mr Alley was “going off and swearing” after they were rejected by an Uber while leaving his best friend’s birthday barbecue.

“He just snapped, called me a sl—t and threw a drink in my face,” Ms Butler said.

Ms Clancy said she was with her partner Leslie Butler at the Palmerston Tavern nearby when she noticed the multiple missed calls and a text from her daughter: “Oi you c—ts, answer your phone”

“She was just crying saying ‘this c—t’s stolen my purse’,” the Palmerston mum said.

Despite actually leaving the bag at the party, Ms Clancy said her daughter claimed Mr Alley “snatched” her purse away.

The jury heard Mr Butler drove Ms Clancy, Mr Wurramarra and Colin Rogan — who just wanted a lift home — to pick up his daughter and the teenager before they drove off.

Both mother and daughter alleged it was Mr Wurramarra who spotted the drunk teenager walking down the dark street and yelled “stop”.

They alleged Mr Wurramarra “chased” down Mr Alley, and he was already around the bend to Waterhouse Crescent when Ms Butler and the teenager got out of the car.

Mr Rogan told the jury that he saw two people arming themselves with metal poles from nearby road works, and heard the “whack” and “twang” of metal hitting flesh and the ground.

Yet Ms Butler repeatedly told the cops that she was unarmed, while her mother maintained “the windows are up. We can’t hear nothing”.

Ms Butler did tell police that Mr Wurramarra had a “kitchen knife” while “Kingsley had a bottle in his hand, I think it was smashed already”.

“So he was using that as a weapon,” she said.

“They were sort of shoving each other around.”

The jury heard Mr Wurramarra claimed Mr Alley “came at him”, but Ms Butler also described Mr Wurramarra as “a sooky sook”, saying “everything sets him off”.

“Dechlan was pretty pissed off that Kingsley threw a drink in my face,” she said.

Ms Butler said as the two fought she called out: “Come on let’s go. I don’t want to get involved in that. I don’t want to get hurt”.

Ms Clancy maintained she never left the car, did not hear the sounds of a fight, or realise that the young man was dead.

“I swear I didn’t f—king know … I didn’t even know there was a dead body there,” she said.

“If I saw this person dead — dead — I would have called the cops.”

The mother told police she screamed out her daughter’s name, saying “I didn't want her being involved in whatever”.

Prosecution have alleged that instead of calling her back, Ms Clancy instead yelled: “Kill him … Kill him Maddy … double bank him”.

Despite Mr Rogan saying he saw the “young fella” laying on the ground, Ms Butler told police when they left “Kingsley was still standing”.

Ms Clancy said as the trio got back in the car she remembered seeing Mr Wurramarra with “blood on his hands”.

Detective Senior Constable First Class Matt Hughes confirmed no charges had been laid against the driver of the car, Mr Butler — Ms Clancy’s partner and Ms Butler’s father.

“We believe he is in Melbourne. His exact location is unknown,” Mr Hughes said.

The trial continues on Monday.

Emotions high as Palmerston teen’s body shown to jury

Updated, Thursday November 7: A chain of yellow plastic markers recreated the final steps of a Palmerston teenager before he collapsed on a driveway in a pool of his own blood.

The family of Kingsley Alley Jr gasped and started to weep as the body of their young loved one was broadcast to the Supreme Court jury on Thursday.

The 18-year-old was shown laying in a pool of blood.

It is alleged this was how his body was left for hours following a brutal assault in the early hours of October 8, 2022.

Melissa Jane Clancy, 39, her 20-year-old daughter Madison Butler, Dechlan Wurramarra, 22, and a teenager – who cannot be named for legal reasons — have all pleaded not guilty to Mr Alley’s murder.

Through a video walk-through, Detective Senior Constable First Class Matt Hughes led the 12 Darwin jurors through the crime scene, tracking an alleged blood trail as it zigzagged from a road works sign to the corner of Driver Ave and Waterhouse Crescent.

Mr Hughes’s camera recorded red splatters marking the tarmac, pavement and grass, finally panning up the driveway of a Palmerston home to reveal the teenager’s corpse.

Fellow Palmerston officer Constable Catherine Baker said despite being one of the first called to the crime scene at 6am, she noted rigor mortis had already set into Mr Alley’s body.

On Thursday, investigators confirmed glass shards were found at the scene alongside metal poles allegedly used in the incident.

The jury has previously heard evidence Mr Wurramarra said Mr Alley “smashed a glass bottle and came at him” before the fatal incident.

Mr Wurramarra ’s arrest photos from Palmerston watchhouse were also shown to a police witness, who confirmed there appeared to be an “obvious mark” to his left cheek, and the young man “winced” from injuries to his right shoulder and rib cage.

The jury also listened to recordings from neighbour’s CCTV cameras, which captured the sounds of distorted screams and yells over the howls of agitated dogs.

The four Defence barristers have indicated that what the distant voices were yelling, and who was calling out was strenuously contested.

“The words that are captured are important,” Ms Clancy’s barrister David Edwardson said.

The trial continues on Friday.

Jury hears young killer used alleged murder weapon to eat dinner

Updated, Tuesday November 5: A young man who allegedly stabbed a teenager to death in the streets then used the same hunting knife to carve up and eat his dinner, a jury has heard.

Palmerston man Wade Hewitt told a Supreme Court jury a 20-year-old alleged murderer ‘boasted’ about “putting down” Kingsley Alley, 18, in the wake of the young man’s death.

On Tuesday the Supreme Court heard from Mr Hewitt and Jamie Drussi, who were both picked up in a car full of people following the alleged fatal assault in the early hours of October 8, 2022.

Mr Wurramarra, Melissa Clancy, her daughter Madison Butler, and teenager — who cannot be identified — have all pleaded not guilty to the murder of Mr Alley.

Mr Hewitt told a jury that Mr Wurramarra, then aged 20, boasted about fatally stabbing the young man, and even continued to use the alleged murder weapon.

“He was still using that knife … I came back there and he was eating with that knife,” he claimed.

Mr Wurramarra ’s defence barrister Jon Tippett suggested that Mr Hewitt was mistaken about the “hunting knife”, and the 20-year-old was potentially using an ordinary “steak knife”.

The Supreme Court heard on Tuesday that Mr Hewitt said he was staying at Ms Clancy’s Cornwallis Circuit home, when the four co-accused and Ms Clancy’s partner, Leslie Butler arrived late at night.

Mr Hewitt said Mr Butler — who is not accused of any wrongdoing in this matter — handed him a black bag “full of knives”, yelling out that “they had been bleached”.

The Palmerston man said it was suggested they all go for a drive, with himself, Mr Butler, Ms Drussi and the four co-accused all cramming into the car.

But Mr Hewitt said as they drove around he became frustrated by their “arguing”, and when they reached Waterhouse Crescent he jumped out.

“It was doing my head in. It wasn’t making much sense,” he said.

It was there that Mr Hewitt said he first saw Mr Alley’s body laying on the driveway, and watched as the teenager got down on his knees to check the pulse of the body.

“He shook the body and it just jiggled,” Mr Hewitt said.

“I just looked at him and said ‘he’s dead’.”

Another passenger, Ms Drussi told the court when the teenager returned to the car he was dry retching and “appeared distraught”.

“He had tears streaming down his face,” she told police.

Ms Drussi said as they drove around for hours — repeatedly returning to the alleged “scene of the crime” — she discovered a serrated knife, a hat and sunglasses shoved under the seat.

Mr Hewitt also said at one point that night he noticed Mr Wurramarra trying to unlock a phone he alleged belonged to Mr Alley.

“You’ve got the phone of someone you’ve just killed, what are you doing?” Mr Hewitt asked Mr Wurramarra .

The jury heard the 20-year-old then threw the phone onto the roof of the Northlakes Shopping Centre.

Mr Hewitt told the jury that Mr Wurramarra told him Mr Alley “smashed a glass bottle and came at him”.

“He said he put him down with a blade,” Mr Hewitt said.

“Declan said he stabbed whoever the f—k the bloke was, because he stole Madison’s purse.

“It was because of Madison that they went after him.” The trial continues.

‘Drunk as a monkey’ witness apologises to slain teen’s family

Updated, Monday November 4: A Palmerston man who watched helplessly as a teenager was allegedly beaten to death in the streets has apologised to his grieving family, saying there was nothing “a sprightly young spring chicken like me” could have done to stop the violence.

On Monday, the Supreme Court jury heard how Colin Rogan inadvertently ended up catching a lift with four people accused of the murder of 18-year-old Kingsley Alley in the early hours of October 8, 2022.

Melissa Jane Clancy, 39, her 20-year-old daughter Madison Butler, Dechlan Wurramarra, 22, and a teenager – who cannot be named for legal reasons — have all pleaded not guilty to Mr Alley’s murder.

Mr Rogan told the jury he was “drunk as a monkey” at the Palmerston Tavern pokies when he decided to call it a night about 2am.

He said he was having a smoke and waiting for a taxi when Ms Butler’s father, Leslie Butler offered him a lift home.

“I thought it was just me and him … then ‘boop boop boop’ three or four people jump in the back,” Mr Rogan said.

Mr Rogan said he could not remember details about his fellow passengers in the dark car park, and did not turn around because of a sore neck.

“I didn’t want to look around like a detective checking them out,” he said.

Mr Rogan told the jury as they drove a message flashed on Mr Butler’s phone and he said he wanted to “find a mate of mine”.

A few minutes later Mr Rogan said one of the women yelled out “look, there he is” pointing to a “young fella” walking along the street near some road works.

“It frightened the bejeezus out of me, I didn’t know what the hell was going on,” Mr Rogan said.

He said the car stopped and the people piled out of the back, with a man and a woman removing metal poles from a construction sign.

“The way they took those pegs out of the road signs, it was like they’d done it before,” Mr Rogan said.

The older man said he was not able to see the “commotion” from behind the car, but heard the “whack” as the body was allegedly hit with signs and the “twang” of the metal poles hitting the road.

When defence lawyers tried to suggest he was incorrectly assuming the noises he heard was an assault, Mr Rogan replied: “well they wasn’t having a corroboree”.

“(They were) screaming and carrying on,” he said.

Barrister David Edwardson suggested Ms Clancy said to the effect of “Maddie, get back in the car”, which Mr Rogan said he did not remember.

Mr Rogan said he did remember seeing the ‘young fella’ with his hands up trying to “dodge those bars”.

“He obviously couldn’t stop em,” he said

“Then he turned and hot tailed it.”

Mr Rogan said the group chased him down, with Mr Butler following in his car.

By the time they caught up with the group, Mr Rogan said the young man was flat on the ground with the group standing around his body.

He said Mr Butler then called out to them: “Hurry up you mob”.

“They got into the car real quickly, like good little soldiers, and we took off,” Mr Rogan said.

“Not a word was from there until my place.”

Mr Alley’s beaten and bloodied body was discovered at sunrise, hours after the alleged fatal assault.

The jury has heard that Mr Butler remained in the car and he is not accused of any wrongdoing.

Mr Rogan said he did not call police that night as his phone was dead, and he expected “someone would call the coppers sooner or later”.

“It was late at night, I was drunk as a monkey. I don’t remember all of this, you know, but I’ll probably never forget it,” he said.

As he left the stand, Mr Rogan called out: “Sorry to the family on what happened, but it is what it is”.

“I was too drunk to do anything, especially for a sprightly young spring chicken like me … we would have had two bodies there,” the older man said.

Jury hears teen’s alleged murderers seeking ‘revenge’ over spilt drink

Updated, Thursday, October 31: A ‘revenge’ plot over a missing purse, a spilt drink and a fight with an Uber driver allegedly led to four people hunting down a teenage boy, leaving him to bleed out in a stranger’s driveway.

The family of 18-year-old Kingsley Alley broke down in tears on Thursday as the Palmerston man’s final words were read to the jury.

“Please, please, ”he allegedly said to his killers.

“Look brother, look,” he called out as the blood seeped from a pierced artery.

The Supreme Court jury heard it would take hours for his beaten and bloodied body to be discovered outside a Driver home on October 8, 2022.

Melissa Jane Clancy, 39, her 20-year-old daughter Madison Butler, Dechlan Wurramarra, 22, and a teenager – who cannot be named for legal reasons — have all pleaded not guilty to Mr Alley’s murder.

In his opening address, prosecutor James Moore said the fateful night began at Mr Alley’s best friend’s 19th birthday party barbecue.

It was alleged Ms Butler and the co-accused teenager were also guests, with the host telling the jury everyone was “chill, fine having a good time”.

But after hours of drinking, the court heard “everything popped off” when Mr Alley, Ms Butler, the teenager and two others tried to pile into an Uber.

Mr Moore said the driver refused to take all five passengers, and during an argument over who should get out Mr Alley tipped his drink on Ms Butler.

He said Mr Alley started assaulting the Uber driver, with the fight spilling out into the street.

After the driver left, it was alleged Ms Butler then “egged on” the teenager, who started to “arch up” at the drunk Mr Alley.

The teenager’s defence barrister Moya O’Brien said the “argy bargy” in the street was merely “peacocking, some puffing up of their chests” before the two boys separated.

The jury heard as Mr Alley walked off, holding only a bottle of Johnny Walker, Ms Butler called her mother Ms Clancy, to pick her up while incorrectly claiming Mr Alley had taken her purse.

“Their objective … was also to get revenge,” he alleged.

“They wanted payback.”

The jury heard Ms Clancy was already with Mr Wurramarra when they picked up her daughter and the other teenager.

As they drove through Palmerston, Mr Moore alleged someone got the driver to stop the car when they spotted Mr Alley.

Mr Moore alleged Mr Wurramarra, armed with a knife, got out of the car alongside Ms Butler and the teenager, who picked up steel poles used for roadworks.

“The three of them set upon the deceased using various weapons … also throwing things like bottles and rocks,” Mr Moore said.

He alleged recordings from the night captured the sound of steel poles hitting flesh, the defendant’s screams of encouragement and the cries of their victim as he begged for it to stop.

Ms Clancy did not leave the car due to a foot injury, but Mr Moore alleged she yelled out: “Kill him … Kill him Maddy … double bank him”.

But the 39-year-old’s lawyer David Edwardson said his client played no part in “whatever happened” that fateful night.

“(She) never left the car, and neither laid a physical hand on Kingsley Alley, nor were they present when he sustained the fatal injuries,” Mr Edwardson said.

The four defence teams were unanimous in opposing the suggestion their clients formed an “agreement” to assault, cause serious harm or even kill Mr Alley.

The trial continues on Friday.

One by one the four co-accused stood before more than 100 witnesses in the Supreme Court on Monday to formally declare their not guilty pleas.

Justice Peter Barr told the packed courtroom gallery that since there were four people on trial, there needed to be a significantly larger pool of potential jurors, with more than 100 Territorians called for the duty.

“The criminal justice system depends heavily on the role of members of the community to serve on juries,” Justice Barr said.

“It is sometimes personally inconvenient, sometimes stressful, sometimes difficult.

“But in order for the system to function as effectively as it does, we call upon a cross section of the community to be involved in jury service.

“Possibly, this will be one of the most important civic functions that any of you might have to carry out.”

Mr Ledek said there were another 10 people who may be called to give evidence if required.

Jury selection took up most of the first day of the trial, with the judge’s directions to the jury expected to be delivered Monday afternoon.

The trial continues on Tuesday.
