New Zealand Warriors coach Andrew Webster has farewelled key assistant Justin Morgan, revealing the Cowboys had “got a good one” for their 2024 staff.

The search to replace North Queensland’s Dragons-bound head of defence Dean Young is over, with Todd Payten securing his former teammate and Warriors assistant to return to his side.

“Morgo is a great coach,” Webster said.

“I worked under Morgo for six years in England and wish him all the best.

“They’ve got a good one there and he’s going to be sorely missed, but like everything, this is the business of rugby league, people move on and get different opportunities.

“Morgs wanted to move back for personal reasons to Australian shores and we support that.

“I know he’s loved his time here, know he’s having a strong contribution right now and I know that will continue.

“We haven’t lost him as if we’ve done something wrong, we part on really good terms and I wish him all the best.”

North Queensland football manager Micheal Luck said earlier this week that the club would announce its 2024 staff at the end of the season.

North Queensland has reportedly signed its successor to assistant coach Dean Young, poaching Warriors forwards coach Justin Morgan on a three-year contract from 2024.

North Queensland football manager Micheal Luck declined to confirm the appointment but endorsed Morgan as a fine coach who would make a great addition to the staff.

“Traditionally with our support staff we’ll put out a statement when they are all finalised and that will be at the back end of the season,” Luck said.

“Justin knows Toddy from their time working together at the Warriors so if he was the guy who comes here he would be a great addition.”

The Welsh international forward spent nine seasons with Parramatta, Canberra and the Warriors between 1994 and 2002, playing 133 games.

Morgan was a teammate of Cowboys coach Todd Payten in the 2000 Raiders side, sharing the field on 15 occasions, and worked under Payten as an assistant during the 2020 NRL season.

Morgan’s coaching career began in France before taking over Hull Kingston Rovers in the Super League, where he coached for six seasons before returning to Australia.

Morgan signed as an assistant under Don Furner in Canberra in 2012 and 2013 then joined Craig Bellamy’s staff for 2014 and 2015.

He joined the Warriors staff in 2016, where he has risen to assist the Kiwi international men’s and women’s teams.
