Jordan Desmond Charles Webber’s charge upgraded after death of Steven ‘Reggie’ Goullet

A Gold Coast man who allegedly ‘coward-punched’ a 62-year-old man outside a licensed venue at Southport over the weekend is expected to make a bail application when he next fronts a magistrate, a court has heard.

A Gold Coast man charged with the one-punch death of a beloved grandfather outside a licensed premises at Southport over the weekend has had his upgraded charge briefly mentioned in court.

Coombabah man Jordan Desmond Charles Webber, 32, made no appearance, nor did he apply for bail, when his charge of unlawful striking causing the death of 62-year-old man Steven Goullet was mentioned in Southport Magistrates Court on November 26.

However, his defence lawyer Mathew Cuskelly indicated his client would make a bail application when his charge was next mentioned on December 5.

Mr Cuskelly also requested the disclosure of CCTV evidence from police.

Mr Webber has not entered a plea to the charge.

Police were called to CSi Club Southport, located at 156 Scarborough St, Southport, just before midnight on Saturday to reports a man had been the victim of a “coward punch” out the front of the venue, in the words of Gold Coast Superintendent Brett Jackson, who spoke on Monday morning.

Police allege Mr Webber struck Mr Goullet once to the side of the head while the pair were in conversation outside the venue, causing the deceased to strike his head on the pavement.

The alleged attack is said by Superintendent Jackson to have been captured on CCTV.

Mr Goullet was rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital’s intensive care unit in a critical condition but died on Tuesday morning.

Mr Webber, who was arrested at the scene in the wake of the alleged punch, then had his original charge of grievous bodily harm upgraded.

In an online fundraiser established by a close friend of Mr Goullet’s daughter Kerrie, and hosted by GoFundMe, the deceased, who was known by the nickname ‘Reggie’, was described as a “beloved dad, poppy, son, brother and uncle”.

Fundraiser creator Stephanie Cupitt said Kerrie, her two brothers Billy and Ricky, and members of the wider Goullet family all travelled to the Gold Coast to be at Mr Goullet’s bedside, where they were told the “prognosis was not good”.

Ms Cupitt said Mr Goullet “passed away... surrounded by his loved ones”.

Local man Simon Burtonclay, who described Mr Goullet as being a mate of four decades, took to social media to remember the deceased as being possessed of an “infectious laughter and devil-may-care attitude to life”.

“You always had my back when I was growing up and I wish I was there on the weekend,” Mr Burtonclay said.

“Rest easy brother.”
