How cricket hero Travis Head's wife Jessica is forging her own path
The woman behind Australia's newest cricket cult hero Travis Head has launched her own business while managing the chaos of his viral stardom and co-parenting their young children.
Knockabout Aussie cricketer Travis Head has become something of a cult hero since drubbing England in the Ashes, sparking dozens of online memes including one depicting him as a king – and his wife Jessica says she is just trying to enjoy the wild ride.
After his history defining knock during the second innings of the first test in Perth last weekend, Head has been the centre of attention across the country, with many likening his knockabout moustached look to a throwback to the halcyon cricketing days of the 70s and 80s.
Following his stellar game, dozens of online memes emerged trumpeting his talents, including one depicting him as the king of England on a glittering throne and others of kids wearing fake moustaches while trying to bat like their new hero.
Head’s wife Jessica, with their children Milla, three, and Harrison, one, were watching proudly – but from their home in Adelaide.
“Perth is only two-and-a-half hours difference but that jet lag gets my kids,” Head told The Telegraph.
Since though, she’s been constantly sent the memes about her husband’s performance.
“They are everywhere. They are very funny. I get sent at least 10 a day from friends, it’s great,” she said.
Being married to an Australian cricketer and living in the intense spotlight is something the family has had to get used to.
Jess recalls her husband receiving a similar hero’s welcome after he scored 137 off 120 balls to lead Australia to victory over in Indian in the World Cup final in 2023.
Personally, she likes to keep a low profile.
“Travis is my priority, my family’s my priority. [The spotlight] is his world. We’re just there to support him,” she said.
Head describes the summer of cricket as the most “chaotic and fun and the busiest time of the year for us.”
One of the highlights is spending Christmas Day with the rest of the players’ families ahead of the Boxing Day test at the MCG. Head says despite being away from home for Christmas, it’s one of the highlights of the summer.
The players’ hotel rooms are decked out in Christmas trees and there is a giant lunch, where Travis and Scott Boland are usually dressed in matching shirts.
“It’s insane. It’s so fun. Cricket Australia are amazing at putting on a family event for Christmas. They get Santa out there and some elves and some little Christmas presents and it’s so festive.”
It comes as Mrs Head has launched her own PR agency, Helix PR, this year.
The decision to start her own company was born out of Travis’ cricket career. Jess explains that on average, her husband is away for 11 months of the year, so when returning to work this year after the birth of her son, flexibility was a high priority.
“With my lifestyle, I would say it’s a roller coaster. You really don’t know where you’re going be the following month with cricket. There is so much opportunity and so many amazing places that we can visit. So I always want to be available so we can be a family. I really needed that flexibility. It’s a juggle. The balance, I don’t know if we’ve worked that out yet, but we’re getting there,” she said.
With an MBA and a business background, as well as experience in content creation where she was managed by Roxy Jacenko, Head saw a gap in the market to focus on public relations in the sporting landscape.
While independently run, the business is part of Helix Group, the talent management company which looks after Travis, who she married in April 2023, although they rarely work together.
“I have a lot of appreciation and respect for what the players go through and how opportunities get thrown their way constantly, “she said.
“I haven’t created Helix PR because I had to support my family. I have done it because I genuinely wanted to. And I think people actually really enjoy what we’re doing.”
