Burleigh Heads parking is to become even more lucrative for the Gold Coast City Council, as higher rates and longer paid hours come into effect.
As of July 1, 2025 metered parking at various Burleigh Heads parking zones will increase by up to 50 per cent, which Burleigh MP, Hermann Vorster, said was “a real kick in the guts.”
Enforcement hours by parking inspectors will also increase from the existing 9am-5pm to 7am-7pm.
“This comes at the worst possible time. Businesses are already battling a parking shortage, construction disruption, and now they’re being hit with a fee hike that risks driving customers away,” Mr Vorster said.
“Currently, parking charges begin at 9am, meaning locals can grab a coffee, enjoy a walk along the Esplanade, or go for a surf without being hit by a fee.
“Under the proposal, charges would start from 7am. It’s effectively a tax on your lifestyle.”
At Alex Black carpark, the rate is set to go up from $5.80 per day to $8.70 per day, an increase of 50 per cent.
On James St at Burleigh Heads, the rate will go up from $2.90 per hour to $3.50 per hour, an increase of 20.69 per cent.
Across five metered parking zones the enforced hours will change from 9am-5pm to 7am-7pm. Across those parking zones, the average price increase is roughly 20 per cent.
Mr Vorster has launched a petition calling for a trial of 30 minutes of free parking, so visitors can park free of charge for 30 minutes, but would be charged for the full time if they park for longer.
“This is about fairness, consultation, and ensuring we support small business — not punish the very people keeping our precinct alive,” he said.
Mr Vorster said the petition is available for signatures at the Division 13 office.
The change comes as some locals lament that while tourists and visitors are quickly slapped with fines for overstaying their paid parking, people who seem to be living in their cars in the area are “immune to consequences.”
