The tragic truth about road deaths in Australia

A Toowoomba man was killed on Tuesday morning after a collision between an e-scooter and car crash at Wilsonton.

The e-scooter rider, a Rockville man aged 61, was travelling along Fitzpatrick St at 11am, October 10, when he was reportedly struck by a silver Holden Commodore sedan at the Richmond Drive intersection, near the Wilsonton Shopping Centre.

After hearing a loud bang, a nearby resident ran from their home to the roadside however the man was gravely injured and was declared dead at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle, a 19-year-old Harlaxton man, was not physically injured and is assisting police with their investigations.

The Queensland Police Forensic Crash Unit is now investigating the cause of the fatal crash.

A Queensland Ambulance spokeswoman said multiple medical teams rushed to the crash at 11.04am, however they quickly left the scene in the hands of police.

A Queensland Police spokesman said the cause of the crash was being investigated.

Initial reports indicate a P-plate driver was travelling southbound along Richmond Drive when his sedan and the scooter collided, leaving debris strewn across the busy road.

A witness said the young man driving the car was almost hit by an oncoming truck as he attempted to move out of the scooter’s way.

Following the crash, multiple residents along Fitzpatrick St said it was only a matter of time before someone lost their life on that stretch of road.

“It’s horrendous but I’m really not surprised (about the scooter incident) with the amount of accidents,” one resident said

“The amount of cars that speed through here is shocking, we can’t sleep at night.

“We’re just waiting for someone to come crashing through our house.

“Something needs to be done – it’s scary.”

Another resident said within the past month, a car crashed and flipped on its roof, and another accident involved schoolchildren.

There is no suggestion that speed was a factor in the fatal crash on Tuesday, October 10.

Witnesses or anyone with dashcam or CCTV vision are urged to come forward.

Investigations are continuing.
