GOVT GREEN-LIGHTS ADANI AFTER REVOLT IN THE BUSH

CONSTRUCTION on Adani’s $2 billion Carmichael coal mine will begin within weeks after Queensland’s Environment Department yesterday gave the company’s final management plan the green light.

After nine years, during which the polarising mine was scaled back and Adani forced to jump through environmental hoops, its groundwater plan was given the all-clear.

It follows a regional Queensland backlash, with mining communities incensed by green activist Bob Brown’s anti-Adani convoy and Labor punished at the federal election.

Adani CEO Lucas Dow said the first Carmichael coal could be exported in two years once the mine and the planned rail line were built.

PONGA BOMBSHELL: WALLABIES PLAN TO POACH NRL STAR

WALLABIES coach Michael Cheika has personally reached out to Kalyn Ponga in a bold bid to lure the NRL superstar to Australian rugby union.

The Courier-Mail can exclusively reveal that Cheika had a private phone conversation with Ponga to gauge his interest in a shock switch back to rugby union, his childhood sport in New Zealand.

Cheika confirmed the call was made when contacted by Newscorp yesterday but wanted to keep details of the discussion confidential.
