Locals and tourists can get their hands on mouth-watering burritos, enjoy a scoop of gelato and sip a margarita at the Surfers Paradise beachfront from today.

The Paradise Centre’s new $40m dining precinct boasting eight eateries has opened its doors.

The new eateries open at the site are: El Camino Cantina, Gelato Messina, Nahm Talay Thai, Hero Sushi, Enzo’s Cucina and La Playa’s.

Wahlburgers and TGI Fridays are expected to open their doors in the coming weeks.

The redevelopment has also brought an expanded range of new retailers to the centre.

These include Baku Swimwear, Rip Curl, Stateside Sports and Dastaan Barber, in addition to the recently opened Surf Dive N’Ski and Vans.

Challenger Group head of retail Adam McKean said it took 900 workers a total of 16 months to bring the redevelopment to life.

“For more than 40 years, Paradise Centre has been a quintessential piece of Gold Coast culture and we are thrilled to unveil this stunning revitalisation which features eye-catching design and a mouth-watering array of dining options that will be sure to serve as a welcome addition for so many locals,” he said.

Destination Gold Coast CEO Patricia O’Callaghan described the new precinct as a “landmark expansion” of the Gold Coast’s tourism offering.

“(It) will mark a critical boost to the city’s tourism offering for retailers and tourism vendors who have been hit hard during the pandemic,” Ms O’Callaghan said.

“Featuring world renowned eateries and retailers, the precinct’s re-development helps bolster Surfers Paradise’s outdoor dining offering and provides holidaymakers with a smorgasbord of restaurant and entertainment options just metres from the beachfront.”

The $40m update comes after a push by members of the Surfers Paradise business community and Surfers councillor Darren Taylor against extending the centre’s lease.

They wanted the council to let the lease expire in 2031 and revert to city control.

But despite the business community and Cr Taylor’s pleas, the council voted in October, 2020 to grant the centre operator Challenger Group a new 30-year lease, expiring in 2050.

A condition of the lease was that Challenger undertake a $30 million revamp.

Challenger Group head of retail Adam McKean said the revamp would change the face of outdoor dining in the tourist hub.

“From authentic Mexican flavours to mouth-watering gelato, iconic burgers and barista-made coffees, there’s something for everyone to suit any taste bud,” Mr McKean said.

“We can’t wait to welcome locals and tourists into this new precinct.”

Destination Gold Coast CEO Patricia O’Callaghan said this type of tourism investment would only boost the Gold Coast’s reputation as a must-visit destination.

“With a number of new hotel openings, personalised experiences and a plethora of dining options on offer, we’re seeing the Gold Coast cement its status as Australia’s favourite holiday playground,” she said.
