A large truck fire and diesel spill caused by a mechanical issue has caused traffic chaos and closed part of the M1 at Chinderah in the Tweed.
Tweed/Byron Police warned motorists about the incident just after 2pm on Thursday and Fire and Rescue NSW firefighters were still on scene at 3.35pm.
“Please avoid the M1 northbound at Chinderah due to a large truck fire and diesel spill,” a police statement read.
A northbound diversion has been put in place via Tweed Valley Way, Riverside Dr and Terranora Rd at Tumbulgum.
NSW Police have confirmed the driver of the truck has not been injured.
It’s believed a fuel tank on the truck ruptured.
