One of the Gold Coast’s rock star export companies is marking it’s 20th birthday with the global release of its biggest luxury yacht to date and eyeing a growth spurt boosting jobs.

Gold Coast-based boat builder Maritimo is showcasing its latest megabucks 75-footer to the world via the city’s very own marine expo, the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show.

The new S75 Sedan Motor Yacht has been three years in development and can now be seen at the at the 34th instalment of the four-day show which kicked off on Thursday. Maritimo is showing off six new vessels at SCIBS.

The S75 is priced at $6.1 million, but with all the potential customisations on offer that price sails closer to $6.8 million.

It’s debut on the water coincided with a major day one sale for another brand Horizon Yachts Australia, which inked a deal on a $10 million Horizon E85 Sport Yacht. For the buyer it was the fifth Horizon and fourth new-build.

Maritimo, which has 320 and contractors, is looking to add 50 roles in the coming year including 10 to 15 apprentices as its exports and forward orders grow.

The company is looking for composite technicians, boat builders and apprentices.

Managing director Tom Barry-Cotter, son of company founder Bill Barry-Cotter, said the S75 encompassed everything “quintessentially Australian”.

“Being a Gold Coast-based company, there’s this unique thing about us - when you purchase a motor yacht, it’s a bit like building a home,” he said.

“So there’s a strong country of origin effect in the international markets with it being an Australian product and it being unique.

“The Sanctuary Cove Boat Show is incredibly important for the Australian and New Zealand market,” he said. “Being our home show it’s always where we have our new model launches, where we have the largest displays of the year and it’s great from a recruitment aspect as well.”

It comes as the luxury motor yacht manufacturer continues its global expansion into South East Asia.

Mr Barry-Cotter said the appointment of The Yacht Sales Co to exclusively distribute to Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand and Hong Kong had already seen a strong demand for Maritimo products.

Fellow Gold Coast based luxury yacht builder Riviera’s chairman Rodney Longhurst said since the pandemic, which supercharged demand for boats, more people than ever were looking to live the luxury marine “lifestyle”.

The global launch of their “private super yacht” the 585 SUV at SCIBS comes as they entertain a waiting list for more than 30 boats, costing potential buyers around $3.3m.

“We see ourselves as a true premium lifestyle option,” Mr Longhurst said.

“From having the perfect dinner on the boat to kids playing together on the alfresco area - it’s a really family event when you’re out on the boat.”
