Three people charged after alleged high-speed joy ride on wrong side of the M1

A 19-year-old man police allege was the driver of a stolen vehicle which weaved through traffic, drove on the wrong side of the road and travelled at speeds of up to 180km/h on the M1 was on bail at the time of the alleged offending.

A 44-year-old woman who was allegedly a passenger in the vehicle was also on bail at the time.

Police said they began tracking the vehicle, a Hyundai Elantra which was allegedly stolen from an Upper Coomera address, at about 7.50pm on Thursday.

It was seen entering an underground carpark on Manchester Rd, Carrara, where the pair allegedly abandoned the Elantra and got into a black Toyota Corolla.

The Corolla, which was not stolen, was stopped by police at Clear Island Waters at about 9.05pm and four people were arrested.

Bodyworn camera footage showed officers making the arrests, handcuffing the 19-year-old in the back of the Corolla before leading him away.

The driver of the Corolla was released without charge, with police saying he had been unaware of what had allegedly just taken place.

“The driver of the Toyota Corolla was picking them up as a favour to the female passenger in his vehicle,” Superintendent Tim Mowle said.

“He was unaware of the linkage to the stolen motor vehicle.”

However, the other three people have all since been charged by police.

Elijah Daniel Troy Shadbolt-Deverick, 19, has been charged with one count each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and two counts of breaching bail conditions.

Mihiterina Sandra Marion El Delvers, 44, has been charged with one count each of possessing dangerous drugs, possess property suspected of having been used in connection with the commission of a drug offence, fail to take reasonable care and precautions in respect of syringe or needle and breach of bail condition.

A 17-year-old Oxenford girl, who was allegedly initially travelling in the Hyundai Elantra, has been charged with one count each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle and possess property suspected of having been acquired for the purpose of committing a drug offence.

Superindent Mowle said all three were known to each other.

He described the manner of driving allegedly observed by police as “absolute lunacy”.

“It (the kind of driving alleged) is very concerning at the best of times, but given the conditions last night with the amount of rain around, 7.50pm at night, you’d expect a lot of traffic on the roads. It’s terribly dangerous,” he said.

None of the three charged are alleged to have been involved in the theft of the Elantra.

“The initial theft of that motor vehicle is still under investigation,” Supt Mowle said. “It is believed that the parties who were arrested ultimately at the end, none of those individuals were involved with the original theft of that motor vehicle. It’s still under investigation.”

It is believed police are following a definite line of inquiry in relation to the theft.

Mr Shadbolt-Deverick, of Oxenford, did not apply for bail when his case was mentioned in Southport Magistrates Court on Friday.

His matter is due to return to court on May 3.

His co-accused, also of Oxenford, was also expected to appear in court on Friday.

The 17-year-old Oxenford girl will face Southport Childrens Court.
