From bizarre alien references to a lack local celebrities, Twitter users didn’t hold back when it came to criticising the production, which looked like it was choreographed by “Mr G from Summer Heights High” according to one user.

Aussie comedian Anthony ‘Lehmo’ Lehmann reckons “we may need to drug test the people who came up with this opening ceremony” while users likened many of the nation’s uniforms to what could be found in discount store Lowes.

One Twitter user even went so far as to say the Aussie team looked like they were “serving nuts on a Qantas flight”.
A number of people were disappointed the ceremony didn’t showcase the city in all its glittering glory including one user who was “waiting for Schapelle Corby, Bernard Tomic, Sophie Monk and Davina (of MAFS infamy) to appear.”

“This is the strangest episode of Bondi Rescue ever.” one commented while another cheekily said “(Peter) Dutton’s brain must be exploding seeing this many foreigners near a beach.”
But it wasn’t all negative: Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull reckons it was “brilliant”.
“Wasn’t Migaloo great? I thought it was brilliant. I also thought the beach tableaux with picnic umbrellas was fantastic,” he told the Sunrise hosts this morning.
“If you want to stay sane, don’t read all that negative stuff (online). I keep an eye on it (social media), but do I go scrolling through Facebook and Twitter comments? No.”
