Tamborine residents call for help after storm

Families on Mount Tamborine and surrounding areas are calling for the help from the Army as trees remain scattered across their properties, fences destroyed, no power and no service.

Tamborine Village resident Hannah Grace-Richardson said the storm was “the most insane natural disaster Tamborine has ever seen”.

Fellow Tamborine residents have told the Bulletin they are pleading for help from the Army as SES services are inundated.

Mrs Grace-Richardson said they started working at 4am on Tuesday to begin the clean-up on their property as trees were uprooted and fences were destroyed.

She said they were distraught to find their cows were unaccounted for on Tuesday morning, but luckily found them at a nearby property in the afternoon.

“We have no service and power,” Mrs Grace-Richardson said.

“Just a modem that’s trying to keep up while the generator runs the essentials.”

Resident Callum Davison said the damage was so extensive, the community was struggling to keep up.

“We have been at it for 24 hours on the chainsaws chopping through power poles and trying to get trees off the road” he said.

“I can’t keep doing this. We are older people here, in the heat, no food. I mean, where the hell is the army?”

“How can this not be an emergency? You just have to use your eyes.”

Volunteers from the State Emergency Service (SES) and Rural Fire Service were on the ground helping with the recovery effort but were struggling with the workload ahead.

Bruce Webster’s Hinterland home was crushed by falling trees and was still waiting for SES and emergency services.

“I still don’t know what to think of it at the moment. Where do we start? We need help, it would be nice to have the army out here helping,” he said.

“With all the trees over roads. The power repairs can’t be done which leaves us in the dark”.

Mr Webster said the costs are mounting for everyone.

Essential supplies were running low. Torches, eskies and even bags of ice have been cleared from stores while generators are in short supply.

Some residents told the Bulletin they are driving hours north of Brisbane to buy them.

Powerlines were severely damaged towards the end of Beenleigh-Beaudesert Road as residents are either without power or relying on generators.

Fuel stations on the Bearded Dragon roundabout remain closed as colorbond roofing hangs from the power lines above.

The produce store was severely damaged from the storm as a tree was uprooted and collapsed onto the building.

Residents on Christmas evening were cut off from going north on Beenleigh-Beaudesert road as powerlines and trees blocked the road.

The road was opened on Boxing Day morning, but vegetation and power lines remain close to the side of the road.
