One of the girls named on a “vulgar” rating list, which eventually took on sinister tones discussing rape and resulted in four students being expelled from prestigious Gold Coast schools, has spoken out.
On October 28, a “serious incident” involving a list came to light after Emmanuel College principal Daniel Brown addressed Year 10 students.
Two days later, it was revealed students from The Southport School (TSS) and Somerset College in Mudgeeraba were also facing scrutiny over the lists. Now a week later, a girl from Somerset College who was ranked on the list has shared how it made her feel “ashamed, embarrassed, upset and angry”.
“I felt sick to my stomach when I saw the word rape,” she said.
“It was more the feeling of being upset and laughed at.
“Everyone knows rape is not something you joke about or use the term lightly.”
The student said she had received screenshots of the list which had descriptions next to girls’ names and “why they were “rapeable”.
“For example (it had), great ass, massive boobs. They were quite vulgar,” she said.
It was understood there was around 20 names on the list.
The student said she now has a “constant feeling that everyone is looking at me and talking about me”.
“I have had lots of people from higher and lower grades contact and approach me to say that they are disgusted at the list and that they hope I’m okay,” she said.
The girl said she was disappointed with how Somerset College had handled the situation and added that the expelled student was still on campus sitting exams.
“When I heard that he had been expelled I felt that the punishment was fair,” she said.
“My thoughts went out the window when I got to school last week, only to find him on site in full uniform sitting his exams.
“I felt so uncomfortable with him around, as do many other girls.”
The student said she believed the boy shouldn’t be allowed on school grounds or to sit his exams if he was expelled.
Parents from Somerset College were outraged the expelled boy was still allowed on campus and said “expulsion in my eyes would mean no exams”.
“How can the school say they don’t condone this behaviour and that they take his breach of code of conduct serious but then allow him to sit his exams,” one parent said.
“I am completely outraged and disgusting at how Somerset College has handled this situation”.
The Bulletin reached out to Somerset College on Friday to confirm if the student was still on campus and sitting exams but they declined to comment.
The girl added that the school had not addressed students regarding the matter.
“We saw the statement sent out by the headmaster saying support is there but the people listed are not people we would go to, as we know what we say wouldn’t be confidential,” she said.
“We should have had our wellbeing as a cohort addressed.”
The incident is now being investigated by Gold Coast Child Protection and Investigation Unit.
