Queensland projected to lose $2 billion from impact of storms

A “severe weather warning” has been issued for the Gold Coast, advising residents to “batten down” as “conditions could become dangerous”.

The warning was issued by the City of Gold Coast at 10.30am, which forecast a strong chance of heavy showers, thunderstorms and locally intense rainfall with an increased risk of flash flooding.

The Bureau of Meteorology shared a thunderstorm forecast at 10am which said “severe storms with heavy to locally intense rain and dangerous flash flooding” was likely for southern and central parts of Queensland.

Meteorologist Felim Hanniffy said while they had not yet issued a warning for the Gold Coast, the city was a “watch point” as a trough moves across the southeast.

Mr Hanniffy said they were unsure on where the trough was going to hit, but said the Gold Coast was not “ruled out”.

He said “it wouldn’t take much” for flash flooding to occur on the Gold Coast.

A text message alert from City of the Gold Coast said the Bureau of Meteorology advised the conditions could occur from late Monday afternoon to Tuesday morning.

“You should prepare now as conditions could become dangerous,” the council statement said.

The warning advised power could stop working, public transport impacted and dangerous conditions on waterways and beaches were likely.

“Check or make an emergency kit, keep asthma medications close by. Batten down and secure boats, watercrafts and pontoons,” the statement said.
