Police have charged a man after he allegedly drove on the wrong side of the road outside a busy high school on the Gold Coast.

Officers began investigating the incident after a video surfaced showing an Isuzu D-Max crossing the median strip and continuing through a roundabout in the opposite direction of traffic, narrowly missing another car.

The alleged incident occurred outside Helensvale State High School around 3.20pm on August 21.

A Gold Coast police spokeswoman said police located the alleged driver on Thursday night and charged him with dangerous driving.

The spokeswoman said the Isuzu D-Max was impounded for 90 days following the alleged incident.

The 36-year-old Loganholme man was given a notice to appear for dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

He is due to face Southport Magistrates Court on September 20.

WHAT ALLEGEDLY HAPPENED

According to the person who posted the footage, the incident allegedly took place at about 3.20pm on Wednesday as children were still making their way from the school, which teaches just over 2000 students.

Orange lights are clearly seen flashing on a school zone sign which the ute driver speed past in the footage, while footage later showed large groups of children walking across a pedestrian crossing a short distance away.

“Whoever this complete tool is needs taking permanently off our roads,” the person who posted the footage wrote.

“Deciding to do a Dukes of Hazard through a school zone at 3.20pm when kids are still around is absolutely unacceptable.

“This gronk decided to jump over an island outside Helensvale High School and accelerate on the opposite side of the road up towards the Monterey Keys shops. Imagine him hitting one of your kids? And I was about to pick my kid up from there.

“If I’d have been I reckon a second quicker he’d have completely taken me out doing something so bloody stupid.

“Queensland Police, you need to deal with this.”

Other locals reported seeing the same vehicle allegedly driving straight through a roundabout at Hope Island and into the path of oncoming traffic a short time later.

“I saw this d**head too, I was gobsmacked,” another person said. “Please report him. I would have but I couldn’t get his rego. Pretty sure he overtook cars at the lights at IGA as well.”
