Police feared they were about to be hit after a car was driven at them on a suburban street when they arrived to investigate reports of gunfire during a wild neighbourhood dispute.

Officers responding to the incident at Rivina Circuit in Coomera had just stepped out of their vehicle at about 8.45pm and begun approaching a white Holden Commodore after noticing that there were two men inside.

As the officers approached the vehicle accelerated towards them, only swerving out of the way at the last moment. The vehicle crashed into a tree a short time later at Holl Lane on Finnegan Way.

“Police have exited their vehicle and they have approached the car because they saw the two men in the street with the lights turned off. The car has then started and sped towards the police before evading them at the last minute and crashing into a nearby address,” Acting Superintendent Mark Mooney said.

“Police were fearful at the time that the car was going to strike them. However the vehicle did of its own volition evade them at the end.”

Two men seen in the vehicle fled the scene. The police dog squad was called, however officers were able to locate them.

The incident came after multiple police units responded to a house on Rivina Circuit after receiving calls from neighbours of a loud commotion and what sounded like shots being fired.

Police said four to five men had gone to the address, threatened a man inside and smashed the windows of his Ford Ranger, which was parked on the street.

Nobody is believed to have been injured in the incident, which has been linked to a neighbourhood dispute.

“Police were called to the Coomera address after numerous reports of gunfire shots and disturbances in the street,” Acting Supt Mooney said.

“ ... What we understand is that there was a neighbourhood dispute that has been going on at the address for a number of days, a number of weeks.

“We believe four or five men have turned up at the address, had an interaction with the male that resides at one of the addresses there at Coomera. The male was threatened during this time, They have damaged his vehicle which parked in the street, and this loud banging is the noise that we believe the neighbours have heard.”

Police do not believe any firearms were involved in the incident, with “no evidence” found of gunshots. No arrests have yet been made in the case.

The man who was threatened and had his car damaged is believed by police to have been under the influence of a substance at the time of the incident.

“Further inquiries are being made with him today to determine whether a complaint will be made,” Acting Supt Mooney said.

“It’s an ongoing dispute between the neighbours. We don’t know the circumstances why. Generally the two parties have been uncooperative.”
