Police investigators at scene of Gold Coast triple fatal

UPDATED: Three people have died and a fourth is fighting for life after a horror crash on the Gold Coast.

Two vehicles collided on Bonogin Rd in the Gold Coast hinterland after 5pm on Friday, according to a Queensland Police Service spokesperson.

It’s understood one vehicle had spun off the road into a power pole before bursting into flames.

The spokesperson confirmed one of the vehicles had been on fire.

The sole occupant of that car, a middle-aged woman, has been rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital with critical injuries while paramedics worked desperately to save three people in the other car. However, they were declared dead at the scene.

A Bonogin resident who lives metres from where the crash happened said her husband was first on scene after he heard a “massive bang”.

“He ran out onto the road with no shirt,” she said, adding “he frantically rang me to say he had pulled a woman out of a car before it exploded”.

Another Bonogin resident, Donny Cruz, claimed a black Mercedes SUV nearly “took him out” while he was driving in the area before the crash occurred.

“The black SUV crossed the lines on the bend on Bonogin Rd near Hardy’s Rd,” Mr Cruz claimed.

“They were going well over the speed limit and regained their lane, narrowly avoiding me in the other lane.”

Power lines were left strewn across the road along with debris from the badly-damaged vehicles.

Police said road closures were in place on the mountainous winding road.

They expected the closures to be in place for some time.

At 7.15pm, Bonogin Road remained closed in both lanes as emergency services worked to recover a body still entrapped in one of the vehicles - more than two hours after the fatal crash.

Almost 1000 homes were left without electricity after a power pole was taken out during the crash.

According to the Energex website, 997 customers were affected across the Austinville, Bonogin and Mudgeeraba areas.

By 7pm, power was restored to about 950 homes.

Another 45 customers were still without power on Bonogin Rd, Calanthe Lane, Carol Anne Ct, Magnolia Lane, Roxby Ct and Tulipwood Dr at 7.30pm.

Energex was expected to provide another update at 10pm.
