The Gold Coast is in for a wet start to the New Year with rain and potential storms forecast across the week.

Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Steve Hadley said the Coast could expect light showers and thunderstorms from Monday through to Friday with a low chance of storms predicted for New Year’s Eve.

“There may be quite a few storms inland for Tuesday on New Year’s Eve,” he said.

“But it might be the case where they are mostly inland, and there’s a slightly lower chance (of any storm activity) on the Coast itself. But don’t rule out the chance of a bit of rain and maybe some lighting on the Gold Coast.”

Mr Hadley said rain and thunderstorm activity was forecast most days this week across the Gold Coast – particularly the hinterland region and northern suburbs.

“It might tail off by about Friday, just going back to showers. But there’s going to be a risk of storms mostly every day through the week,” he said.

“There’s not a massively high chance of severe storms – but we wouldn’t want to rule it out.”

As the wet weather sweeps through temperatures are expected to drop to one degree cooler than average across the week.

The change comes following a hot and sunny Christmas week across the Gold Coast, with only a storm on Saturday night – captured moving towards Burleigh Heads in the above image from reader Steve O’Ferrall – breaking the spell of near perfect weather.
