Alexa Leary should not be here.
She definitely should not be walking and talking.
And she almost certainly should not be winning gold medals on the global stage and breaking world swimming records as she did in Paris earlier this year.
When the once-promising triathlete crashed off her road bike at more than 70km an hour in July 2021, smashing her head into the Sunshine Coast bitumen, doctors forecast the worst.
But the plucky, brave Gold Coaster is back walking, talking and competing - a self-described “living miracle”.
In a Gold Coast Bulletin documentary, coming out on New Year’s Day to subscribers, her parents Russell and Belinda, and Alexa herself open up on her brave and remarkable journey that has defied medical predictions.
The moving documentary Alexa’s Story - filmed by Portia Large and Matt Coleman in the lead up to her winning the Gold Coast Bulletin Woman of the Year award sponsored by Harvey Norman - features exclusive interviews and never-before-seen footage, taking you inside her remarkable battle to walk, talk and compete again.
Russell and Belinda recount being told to get ready to say goodbye to their bubbly, high-achieving daughter more than eight times as she fought to recover from her horrific injuries.
If she did survive, father Russell remembers they were told she would have no quality of life - but he says: “She fought through - there is an incredible spirit inside her”.
Alexa adds: “I’ve fought to be here - and I’ve fought to walk and talk again.”
Don’t miss Alexa’s Story, an exclusive documentary coming out on New Year’s Day January 1.
