More than 150 motorists parked near the Gold Coast Titans home game at the weekend have left with a hefty hangover – slapped with parking fines by council.

Punters leaving the record-breaking match at CBUS Super stadium in Robina on Saturday afternoon returned to their cars to find not just their vehicle but entire rows were ticketed.

Parking fine recipient Tim Grant said he was one of the unlucky drivers stung for parking on a grassed playing field.

“They (council) really are cheeky b---ards,” Mr Grant said. “Can’t park at the stadium, there’s no spaces on the road.

“What do they want us to do - levitate here?”

Gold Coast City Council confirmed 158 infringements were issued for “a range of offences”.

“Including parking longer than permitted, parking on a footpath/nature strip, unauthorised vehicles parked in a council park or reserve, and parking in no stopping areas” a council spokeswoman said in a statement.

“The City monitors parking in the Robina Stadium Traffic Area due to regular complaints from members of the community about illegal and dangerous parking.”

CBUS Super stadium, which can hold up to 27,690 people, doesn’t have any public parking, and two minute time limits are enforced on surrounding streets during event days. Free public transport to and from the stadium is available to those with tickets.

But Mr Grant said he believed the lack of spaces and crackdown from council would discourage punters from coming to games.

“From my working – the council probably made $20,000 from the fines on that afternoon,” Mr Grant said.

“It’s just a cash grab that doesn’t address the real issue of parking availability.”

On the flipside, the parking pain has local residents at their wits end with reports they’ve been threatened, had their driveways blocked by cars and are often left to deal with ruined lawns from the influx of traffic.

It sparked a recent petition to council with more than 100 residents begging for help from authorities. It prompted CBUS Super Stadium management to meet with concerned locals and agreement reached to put better traffic control in place - and ensure only residents and visitors could access some streets on event days.
