Residents of a ritzy Broadbeach Waters street say they are at their wits’ end dealing with squatters in an abandoned property.

Neighbours claim the house on affluent Monaco Street has been used by a stream of squatters for months and their homes used as access ways to the site.

They say they are scared for their safety and concerned the overgrown “eyesore” had turned into a fire hazard.

Residents claim they have contacted police and Gold Coast City Council following multiple failed attempts to contact the owner.

One neighbour said they had tried to contact him about the matter since they bought nearly 14 months ago.

“It’s a pig sty out the back, the carpet looks all ripped up inside when the police went inside they said it was disgusting. It’s overgrown and there’s garbage everywhere,” they said.

“A lady next door to the property said she has been sleeping downstairs for weeks because she was hearing things and was scared – another lady came over and asked if I knew what was going on as she had a guy jumping on and across her roof.”

According to locals the property has a history of squatters and was previously used by drug addicts. They claim the former squatters were “chased out” by other residents following an alleged drug-related episode out the front of a neighbouring property.

Another owner said they were at their wits’ end worried about the “high risk for potential fire” and safety of their family after their roof and awnings were used as a ‘walkway’ out of the property.

A Queensland Police Service spokesperson said they were investigating following a break in on March 11.

The spokesperson said emergency services were called to the unoccupied Monaco Street property at approximately 11am to reports a man had broken through a fence.

No one was physically injured. Police urged anyone with information to contact them.

Gold Coast City Council told the Bulletin they had undertaken compliance action for an unkempt property and engaged contractors to enter and clear the unkept property between March 7 and April 4.

A council spokesperson said: “City Officers will continue to work with the Queensland Police Service and local welfare services in this matter.”

The Bulletin reached out to the owner for comment.
