A man has died in a truck crash in the Gold Coast hinterland in the same spot as Queensland’s worst bus disaster.

The truck crashed over an embankment at Henri Robert Drive at Clagiraba around 1.30pm on Wednesday.

The driver, a 39-year-old Inala man understood to be working as a removalist, died at the scene. The passenger, a 23-year-old Brisbane City man, survived the crash with non-life threatening head injuries and was transported to Gold Coast University Hospital.

A police spokesperson said the road reopened almost seven hours after the crash, around 8pm on Wednesday.

Acting senior sergeant Teegan Shivola told the Bulletin: “There was a two vehicle crash that resulted in one fatality.

“Our forensic crash unit is in the process of investigating.”

Sgt Shivola said the had been another passenger transported to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Scott Morgan from Queensland Fire Service said: “We’re just waiting at the moment for Energex to cut the power because the power poles have been knocked down.

“We’re just waiting for it to be safe before we extricate the truck.”

Witnesses on the scene claimed the crash site was chaotic with powerlines strewn across the road.

Residents took to social media posts about the crash, with one user saying “another one geez somebody stop the carnage”.

Another person wrote: “I thought it was going to bad with all those sirens I heard going past.”

The stretch of road is notorious for multiple heavy vehicle crashes over the years including a 1990 bus crash, carrying mainly elderly passengers, that killed 11 people and left 38 injured.

In October last year, A 48-year-old Tallebudgera woman was killed in a crash less than a kilometre away on the adjoining Beaudesert-Nerang Rd when she lost control of her ute before it flipped and rolled. She was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a life-threatening condition but was declared dead on arrival.

Henri Robert Drive has also seen multiple truck crashes in 2018 and 2014.
