Man, 30, charged following alleged Surfers Paradise brawl

A man has allegedly jumped into a bull shark riddled river on the Gold Coast to escape police following an alleged brawl. See the video of his arrest.

A man has been tackled and tasered by police on the Gold Coast after allegedly running from officers and swimming across the a bull shark riddled river to try and escape.

Officers were called to Cavill Ave in Surfers Paradise about 8.40pm on Thursday to reports of a brawl involving two groups of people.

A Queensland Police Service spokesman said attending officers were attempting to speak with a man at the scene when it’s alleged he bolted, diving into the Nerang River and swimming towards Chevron Island.

A short time later police found the man outside an apartment block on the corner of Tarcoola Crescent and Stanhill Drive where he was tasered and taken into custody by a number of officers.

The dramatic arrest was captured on camera by a resident at a nearby apartment building.

A 30-year-old man from Warner has been charged with one count each of public nuisance and obstructing police.

He was refused bail to front Southport Magistrates Court on Friday.
