Joseph Kingi Matthews charged with alleged Burleigh hit-and-run

A Gold Coast teen who allegedly struck a pedestrian – leaving him with serious injuries – and fled the scene has appeared in court for the first time since being charged.

A Gold Coast teen who allegedly fled the scene of a crash that left a pedestrian with serious injuries has fronted court for the first time.

Police allege Joseph Kingi Matthews did not stop after his Nissan Navara utility struck a pedestrian on Goodwin Terrace, Burleigh Heads at about 1.10am on October 20.

The pedestrian – later identified as a 28-year-old Deception Bay man – was transported to Gold Coast University Hospital with serious injuries.

Mr Matthews was tracked down and arrested at Coomera several hours later.

He was charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle causing grievous bodily harm and failing to remain at incident and render assistance.

The 19-year-old was supported by several people when he faced Southport Magistrates Court for the first time since being charged.

The court was told he required an adjournment of several weeks to apply for legal aid funding.

His case is due to return to court on December 2 and he remains on bail.
