Illegal campers set up near entrance to Burleigh Beach Tourist Park

Locals are calling for action over illegal camping near the entrance to one of the Gold Coast’s prime tourist parks.

Burleigh residents say the area’s image is being tarnished by an illegal encampment passed by tourists heading into the popular Burleigh Beach Tourist Park.

Bikes, scooters and other items surround a tarp-covered van parked across two public car parking spaces on a road leading to the council-owned park, while a tent has also been pitched at the location.

“It’s disgusting,” a frustrated local told the Bulletin.

“The caravan park is supposed to be one of the jewels in council’s crown, the beautiful caravan park at Burleigh. And look at the sh*tshow you’ve got at the entrance.

“Any tourists would see it and say what the hell’s going on there.”

The long-time Burleigh resident, who did not want to be named, said locals had complained about the issue but there appeared little that council and police could do.

“It seems like because they’re homeless nobody will do anything,” he said.

“Everyone tells me there’s nothing they can do.”

The issue comes after the Bulletin in April reported how residents had called for a crackdown on illegal camping along The Esplanade at Burleigh, where people had been sleeping out in vans in foreshore car parks

It also comes following a series of Bulletin reports highlighting concerns over crime and disruption caused by construction works in the area.

Division 13 councillor Josh Martin said he was aware of how important Burleigh’s image was to locals and businesses and was doing everything he could to protect it.

He said council was working to find long-term solutions that did not just involve moving individuals complained about to another area nearby.

“I have asked for City officers to provide me ongoing updates regarding this issue,” Mr Martin said.

“I’m aware that there are individuals that are homeless which the City is trying to resolve, rather than attempt to move the problem to another nearby street.

“While the primary responsibility for homelessness is the State Government, the City has additionally invested in Public Space Liaison Officers (PLSO) to work with homeless individuals to connect them with services to successfully get them off the street.

“City officers have been visiting the site regularly and are working towards a good outcome for all parties.”

Mr Martin said he had requested that council staff ensured the area was cleaned up in the meantime.

“I have requested that the City officers ensure the clutter of items is cleaned up as soon as possible,” he said.

“Additionally, I have sought regular updates regarding how the PLSO’s engagement is progressing to get people off the street and into safe housing.

“(On Saturday) we held the Burleigh Beats Street Festival, which was a huge community event that supports local businesses and brought the community to together.

“I’m aware of how important Burleigh’s image and reputation is to businesses and locals, and I will do everything I can, within my powers, to protect that.”
