Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 3 fly-through

While residents and visitors to Burleigh Heads have been plagued by ongoing light rail construction, one significant step has already transformed the suburb.

Gold Coast City Council (GCCC) along with the John Holland Group are making rapid visual progress on Light Rail Stage 3, which will take the route from Broadbeach to Burleigh Heads.

GoldlinQ CEO Phil Mumford said they took down 25 power poles and conductor spans on March 3, “transforming” the heart of the suburb.

The poles – which will now run underground – were removed from Sunbeau Court to Tweed Street.

Photos of the new and improved Burleigh Heads now show no overhead powerlines along Memorial and Mowbray Park.

“This was the final step in a major electrical reconfiguration at Burleigh and followed 15 months of work to install and commission an underground network,” Mr Mumford said.

“The change will have efficiency, reliability, safety and amenity benefits.”

Mr Mumford said it was crucial to complete the underground electrical grid to “future-proof” critical assets.

“More than 10km of drainage, water, sewage and communications infrastructure have been upgraded since Stage 3 works started in late 2022,” he said.

“This is needed to support a rapidly growing city.”
