Gold Coast’s HOTA unveils Could Play and Baz Luhrmann spectacular

A record-breaking sculpture filled with 10,000 messages has been unveiled at HOTA along with music, art and maybe even a visit from Baz Luhrmann himself.

Ten thousand messages from 10,000 Gold Coasters have been encased in the world’s largest sculpture work of its kind.

Earlier this year Home of the Arts (HOTA) developed a public program where locals were invited to write a message on a ribbon.

Shipped off to the States, the ribbons were turned into a giant 530sqm kinetic sculpture – Cloud Play – which has just been erected on the HOTA lawn.

Experience Gold Coast head of arts and culture Yarmila Alfonzetti said locals can now feast their eyes upon the special piece from May 31 until July 13 as part of Wonder 2025.

“Wonder is a moment in time in the middle of the year to bring people together to enjoy a major outdoor installation or sculpture,” she said.

“This year the centrepiece of Wonder is a beautiful floating net in the sky created by a company called Poetic Kinetics in the US. These happen in other places of the world, but this is the largest one ever.”

Ms Alfonzetti said the Australia exclusive right in the heart of the Gold Coast is part of a series of events, concerts and shows all hosted underneath the sculpture.

“On Sunday June 1 we’ve got a big five hour concert called ‘Sounds Like Gold’, which is many amazing Gold Coast local bands, it’s free and is going to be so much fun,” Ms Alfonzetti said.

Ms Alfonzetti said there will also be a few ticketed performances including Strictly Baz Luhrmann, which may even feature a visit from the man himself.

“This is gonna be my favourite. Many people don’t realise how fantastic the music is in all of those Baz Luhrmann films,” she said.

“Romeo and Juliet, Strictly Ballroom, Moulin Rouge, Elvis, we’ve got an orchestra, we’ve got singers belting out tunes from all those Baz Luhrmann films.”

Tickets to Strictly Baz Luhrmann start from $19.
