OFF duty nurses and a doctor rushed to the scene of a Starbucks on the Gold Coast after an elderly man drove into the front of the cafe.

An 83-year-old man drove his car through a metal bollard and into the window of the coffee shop on Surf Parade in Broadbeach at about 1.45pm on Friday.

According to a nearby worker two bystanders copped the main force of the car, which was travelling up to 30km p/h before it crashed.

He said people were quick to get onto their phones to ring for help.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesperson said seven people were assessed at the scene, with five taken to hospitals around the Gold Coast.

“There was a 13-year-old female who suffered anxiety. She was very close to where the incident occurred,” he said.

“As you can appreciate, a child of that age is going to have a response to that. They were very upset.

“The other patients were aged between early 50s to late 80s.

“Everyone was very lucky, there were only minor injuries.”

Gold Coast police officer Matt Howard said officers from the nearby station ran to the scene.

“The incident is still under investigation but it appears the male’s vehicle started to roll forward and he went to put the brake on but it appears he’s accelerated,” he said.

“When you see the scene it is quite amazing there was only minor injuries.”

Mr Howard said the driver was taken back to the station to help with the police investigation.

He said it is too early to know if charges will be laid.
