A man has been chased by a dog squad and arrested by police after fleeing the scene of a serious crash on the M1, which left two people in hospital.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services were called to a “serious” two car crash on the M1 southbound in Pimpama at around 8.20pm on Thursday.

A Gold Coast police spokesperson said a BMW X5 collided with a Toyota Camry near the Yawalpah Road Exit.

The 41-year-old BMW driver fled the scene when officers arrived. He was tracked by a police dog squad and arrested nearby.

A 41-year-old man and 64-year-old woman travelling in the Toyota Camry were transported to Gold Coast University Hospital in stable conditions.

The police spokesperson said the BMW was not stolen but investigations were ongoing.

No charges have been laid.

It was the second incident police were called to on Thursday night after a car crashed into a shop in Ormeau.

Police were called to Arthur Way in Ormeau after a red 2018 Mazda 3 smashed into a shop at the Ormeau Junction Shopping Village.

The 73-year-old driver sustained serious injuries and the 72-year-old female passenger suffered a cut to her head. Both were taken to Gold Coast University Hospital.

No one inside the business was injured.
