Gold Coast residents have jumped at the chance to photograph an unusual cloud formation seen over the city as some suburbs were smashed by hail as big as golf balls.
Dozens of the photos of the eye-catching clouds emerged as they captured attention in the skies above the Glitter Strip as the sun set early on Thursday night.
Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Jonathan How said on Friday morning that the clouds were simply “cumulonimbus clouds, or thunderstorm clouds”.
He said it appeared the clouds were “in the mature stage, with a prominent anvil shape at the top”.
On Thursday afternoon, the BOM warned of severe thunderstorms over the Gold Coast and Scenic Rim. While some hail fell, the storm bought very little rain.
The BOM has forecast sunny conditions with light winds throughout Friday and into the weekend, with a top of 31C on Friday, 29C on Saturday and 27C on Sunday.
Visit the BOM website for more information about cloud formations.
