Gold Coast City Council has applied for six trademarks for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games – five more than the Brisbane Organising Committee.

As debate rages over the merits of hosting another Commonwealth Games, Gold Coast is already making its mark on 2032, applying for rights on the words “Festival 2032”, “Gold Coast 2032” and “GC2032”.

They’ve also lodged applications for three black-and-white logos featuring the same word combinations, each bearing three brushstrokes.

The trademarks, if approved, would cover virtually every type of good and service including food, clothing and souvenirs; business, insurance and financial services; advertising space; real estate and property services; cultural activities; sporting activities and publications.

The bulk of intellectual property surrounding the Games is held by the major sporting bodies, with the Australian Olympic Committee holding the rights to “Queensland 2032”, “Brisbane 2032” two similar phrases.

Paralympics Australia holds two trademarks related to the event while the International Olympic Committee holds the Brisbane 2032 and Queensland 2032 logos, replete with the Olympic Rings.

The Brisbane Organising Committee has also applied to trademark the words “Brisbane 2032” for a wide range of uses, including some not covered by the AOC’s trademark.

The State of Queensland has applied for “Q2032” and QLD2032”.

A statement from Gold Coast council said it had applied for the trademarks in its role as a delivery partner.

“With this in mind, and as we embark on the early planning stages, analysis of city risk and reputation have prompted us to look at applying for registration of several trademarks,” it said.

“We are seeking to secure the marks for the council’s use and importantly, ensure the ability to moderate others from using them for commercial purposes, including in a way that confuses the public ahead of and around the Games.”

Meanwhile, the defunct Victorian 2026 Commonwealth Games organisation owns the trademark to “Commonwealth Games 2026”.
