A GIANT floating Mediterranean-inspired beach club will open on the Gold Coast within weeks, as the next chapter of the city’s hospitality war takes to the water.

The La Luna Beach Club will float between boat docks at Marina Mirage at Main Beach. The 120-seat restaurant is expected to be open on January 10 and the entire project completed by March.

The Gennari Group proposal would be Australia’s first floating luxury beach club and has been pitched as “Mykonos St Tropez luxury meets bohemian”.

Gennari Group general manager Steve De Maio said the project would be a “real game-changer” and “no expense would be spared”.

The restaurant will serve Mediterranean Asian fusion.

He said there would be no comparison with the city’s other beach clubs, including the trial venue set to open at Kurrawa Terrace this weekend.

“It’s a big project which is unprecedented in terms of its size, scope and quality,” he said.

“We wouldn’t want our brand to be aligned with other beach clubs - we have a more elevated clientele. Think Mediterranean sparkling rose by the pool than a dance party.

“It is a massive build and nobody has an 840sq m venue sitting under the superyachts, so what we are planning is sure to be quite spectacular.”

Gennari Group had originally hoped to open La Luna before Christmas but, like many others, was affected by material shortages and closed borders.

Its restaurant will serve Mediterranean Asian fusion.

Concept plans show it will offer indoor and poolside dining, day beds, private cabanas, a runway and bar.

Mr De Maio said he hoped La Luna would spearhead a revival of the southern area of The Spit, which includes Marina Mirage and Mariner’s Cove.

“Engaging with the water at Marina Mirage has so much potential for that style of dining and it will be both quintessential Gold Coast and the future business model for restaurants,” he said.

The Gold Coast City Council will start its long-awaited beach club trial at Kurrawa with operator Australian Venue Co this weekend.

The trial will get a five-week head start on La Luna and joins other beach-style venues, including Surfers Paradise’s Cali Beach Club and The Star’s Isoletto Pool Club at Broadbeach.

The Kurrawa project has proved highly controversial and comes after years of debate over whether the city should commercialise its beaches.

The success of the trial will be analysed in 2022.
