Freedom bid for NRL star’s jailed half-brother Sham Vilevu Hui

The half-brother of an NRL star has faced court almost a year after he allegedly stabbed a man during a violent rampage at Palm Beach.

The half-brother of an NRL star has been granted bail almost a year after he allegedly stabbed a man during a violent rampage at Palm Beach.

Sham Vilevu Hui, the half-brother of Melbourne Storm player Xavier Coates, is accused of stabbing Gold Coast physiotherapist James Fletcher, who went to help his elderly neighbours after their home was broken into during the night of November 15, 2021.

Mr Fletcher was stabbed in the stomach with a kitchen knife after running over to see what the commotion was about.

The Logan Central man is also accused of stalking Gold Coast soccer identity Damien Michael Lonergan at the same Palm Beach address where he allegedly stabbed Mr Fletcher.

He is facing a string of charges including acts intending to maim, unlawful stalking/threatening violence and wilful damage.

During a bail application in the Southport Magistrates Court on Tuesday, the court was told Hui had been behind bars for almost a year, of which six months was spent in a mental health facility.

Magistrate Kerry Magee said the alleged offending appeared to have occurred in the context of Hui having “delusional ideations”.

“There is a very real possibility that the defendant will not be convicted of the offence in circumstances where the facts surrounding the offending raise very serious issues about the defendant’s capacity to understand what he was doing,” she said.

The court was told the Logan man was under a treatment authority and his mental health condition had stabilised.

Hui was granted bail with a number of conditions, including that he be supervised by a mental health service, live with his mother in Southport and report to police weekly, among other conditions.

His matters were adjourned to February 14, 2023.
