A former professional rugby player who competed at the Commonwealth Games is one of eight new constables to be deployed on the Gold Coast.
The new recruits had their orientation at Mudgeeraba Police Station on Monday, the start of 12 months of training.
Three of the constables will be stationed at Broadbeach, two at Nerang and one each at Coomera, Robina and Southport.
Emma Sykes — who represented Australia and won two gold medals at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in the Rugby Sevens team — said she was “excited” to take the next step in her life with Queensland Police.
The 26-year-old recruit said she stopped playing “a few years ago” and “didn’t really know what to do” afterwards.
“I got to travel the world and it was a really cool job to have but I always wanted to join the police and it was a now or never opportunity,” Ms Sykes said.
She said she would take the professionalism she learnt from Rugby Sevens into the Queensland Police Service.
“You have to be a role model for the community, help people and make a difference in peoples lives.”
