A man was allegedly stabbed in the back with a screwdriver – leaving him in a critical condition – after a dispute over rent money, according to police.
A 27-year-old man was found with a wound in his back on Prince St, Southport at about 9pm on Thursday, following reports of a disturbance involving a group of people.
He was rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical but stable condition.
A 65-year-old man was also taken to hospital in a stable condition with facial injuries.
Police said last week that three men fled the scene before officers arrived.
It will be alleged that the dispute erupted when the man accused of the stabbing returned to the house with two other accused to recover vapes and a toothbrush.
“We arrested initially two alleged offenders for assault occasioning bodily harm and a third offender who we will allege wasarmed with a screwdriver and did stab a male,” Superintendent Peter Miles said.
“He has been arrested for wounding.
“It all (allegedly) stems from what looks like a civil matter where money was owed for rent to one of the occupants that was assaulted.”
Karanveer Singh has been identified as the man now charged with wounding and assault occasioning bodily harm while armed/in company.
The 35-year-old faced Southport Magistrates Court on Monday to make a bail application, which was opposed by police prosecutions.
Prosecutor Corey Cook said Mr Singh was already on bail at the time of the alleged stabbing and that time previously spent in the watchhouse should have been a “wake-up call”.
Representing Mr Singh, duty lawyer Chelsea Cross said the chef was diagnosed with anxiety and could be at risk of serving too much time in custody if not released.
Magistrate Sue Ganasan refused the accused’s bail, saying he posed an unacceptable risk of reoffending, skipping court or endangering the safety of others allegedly involved.
Mr Singh’s case is due to return to court on September 6.
One of his co-accused was due to face court on Saturday and the other on September 9.
