A man is in hospital after a terrifying crash involving a stolen car, which is causing traffic mayhem on the M1.

Emergency services arrived at the two-car crash on the Pacific Motorway in Pimpama just before 5am on Tuesday.

A Gold Coast police spokeswoman said a stolen white Mitsubishi Outlander collided with a van in the southbound lanes.

The crash caused the van to roll, entrapping the 50-year-old man who was driving.

Paramedics took him to Logan Hospital in a stable condition.

The police spokeswoman said the occupants of the stolen car fled the scene and remain on the run.

One southbound lane was blocked as a result of the crash, causing “standstill” traffic.

At around 6.15am, the lane was reopened but traffic remained backed up to Eagleby.

Investigations are ongoing.
