Destination Gold Coast has announced “the world’s first underwater rollercoaster”, would launch in the city 2023 – but all is not as it seems.
Billed in the March 31 post as a “multi million-dollar investment” that was “Not for the faint-hearted or the ocean-fearers”, the 40m ride would be a “fully immersive experience”.
“Riders will be taken on a 1km amphibious journey through the big blue, exposed to all of nature’s elements including local marine life, coral vistas and the salty breeze and water,” the post said.
“This multimillion-dollar investment will see the Gold Coast elevate from Australia’s favourite playground to the World’s favourite playground!”
The post was widely shared across the internet, garnering more than 1600 comments, with more savvy followers quickly realising the post was an April Fool’s joke which had peaked too soon.
“March 31st today. Someone posted this a day early,” said one.
“Pretty sure March has 31 days…,” scoffed another.
While many people picked up on the premature jocularity, many others were very excited to board the incredible new ride.
“Family Holiday 2023,” said one.
“We have to do this when it’s completed!,” wrote another.
“OMG, can we?!”
“We’re coming down for this.”
Realising March had 31 days, Destination Gold Coast commented on its post with an attempted save: “Construction expects to be completed by April 1st, 2023.”
Oh well DGC, there’s always next year!
