Family struck by countless tragedies remembers their son, Kyle Bermudo

A family shattered by tragedy are putting one foot in front of the other in memory of their beloved son and brother, Daimler Kyle Hipolito Bermudo – better known as Kyle.

On Friday, March 22, 2024, Kyle was killed aged just 21 by an alleged unlawful street racer – struck by a Hyundai Veloster while crossing a Southport road at the intersection of Smith St and Village Blvd.

Now his grieving family say they are determined to keep his legacy alive on what would’ve been Kyle’s 23rd birthday this October 30 – with a walk and fundraising effort to feed the homeless.

“Kyle loved to feed people, to help people,” his mum Jasmine Bermudo said.

“Anytime he was on placement at the hospital he would bring food in for everyone, it’s just who he was.”

A Griffith University student, Kyle was just months away from graduating with a Bachelor’s in Nursing before his tragic death.

“We know that’s what would’ve made him happy, so after this walk on his birthday, we will be feeding the homeless at Set Free Care in Southport on November 13,” Mrs Bermudo said.

With the help of friends and colleagues the family aim to feed 100 homeless to honour their beloved Kyle.

“It’s really important for me because I know my son, he’s had this big heart,” Mrs Bermudo said.

“He wanted to finish his course and do nursing to help the community because he loved people. We want to continue what he wants. I know he would be happy watching over us and seeing us do this.”

The Walk for Kyle takes place October 30 at 8.30am from the intersection of Smith St and Village Blvd to the Broadwater and back.
