Police are appealing for help to trace an opportunistic thief who smashed his way into a Gold Coast jewellery store with a hammer in the early hours of Sunday morning.
CCTV footage showed the man breaking his way into CTJ Jewellery in Bundall before using the hammer to smash open cabinets.
Police said the offender, who spent just two minutes on the premises, took off with silver jewellery worth about $5000.
“At about 3.48am on Sunday a break and enter occurred at CTJ Jewellery located on Upton St in Bundall,” Acting Superintendent Mark Mooney said.
“The male has used a hammer to force entry to the premises. He’s then used the same hammer to smash open a couple of cabinets and stolen a quantity of silver jewellery.”
Although police responded quickly to the scene, the offender had absconded and remains at large.
Officers on Monday appealed for anyone with information that may help in their investigation to come forward.
“We’re hoping that members of the public come forward and identify that male person,” Acting Supt Mooney said.
