Beachgoers have been left stunned by a bubbling hole opening up in the middle of popular Main Beach on Tuesday.
Main Beach local and fashion blogger Carolyn Evans was on her way to work when she came across a two-metre wide hole spewing water out of it in the middle of the Main Beach sand off the Woodroffe Ave Deck.
“A bit crazy this morning,” Ms Evans said on her viral Facebook post.
“I couldn’t believe it, I have never seen anything like this before,” Ms Evans said.
“I spoke to some tradesmen working nearby and they were also quite shocked. I contacted my local councillor Darren Taylor to let him know about the hole.
“I was more concerned about safety.”
The images sparked online concern about a potential sink hole.
However a Gold Coast City Council spokeswoman said council was already on the scene when the hole erupted.
“It was part of testing for the Surfers Paradise Sand Backpass project,” the spokeswoman said.
“During the testing process there was a small leak which has caused the hole. It was immediately cordoned off and filled in.”
The Surfers Paradise Sand Backpass project is a new sand transport system designed to mitigate erosion by pumping sand from the existing Gold Coast Waterways Authority Sand (GCWA) Bypass System at The Spit to Surfers Paradise, Narrowneck, and Main Beach.
The project is due to begin next week the spokeswoman said.
