Construction work will begin next year on a new public hospital in Coomera after it was announced on Monday that a major builder has been awarded the tender for stage one of the project.

Minister for Health Shannon Fentiman on Thursday said Multiplex Constructions had been awarded the contract for the new 404-bed facility, which is to be built on a George Alexander Way site adjacent to Coomera Westfield and the Coomera Train Station.

“This is a game changer for those living on the northern Gold Coast,” Ms Fentiman said.

“This new hospital will offer wonderful new state of the art technology, new birthing suites, operating theatres, consult rooms.

“I’m so excited that there will be a special care nursery, coronary care and intensive care. All of the services that Gold Coasters need and I’m so excited that they’ll be able to get those services close to home.”

News of the tender award comes after $78 million was allocated in the recent state budget towards work on the $1.3 billion project, which is expected to be completed by 2027.

Gaven MP and Housing Minister Meaghan Scanlon said the government was anxious to get the hospital up and running “as quickly as possible” given the growing demand for services on the Gold Coast.

“The preparatory works have already been undertaken on this site. Now Multiplex have got that detailed design they’ll work on that, with construction to start next year,” Ms Scanlon said.

“We know the Gold Coast is growing and growing, and that’s why we’re delivering record amounts, to try to make sure we can keep up with demand.”

The hospital, when built, will be 13 storeys tall and have parking spaces for 2450 cars.

Provision has also been made for a later expansion of the hospital which would bring its bed count to 800.

Ms Fentiman said her department would “work closely” with the Department of Transport and Main Roads to ensure roads were “fit for purpose” to handle traffic generated as a result of the development, in an area where two private hospitals are also planned and a Costco Warehouse opened on Thursday.

“Obviously we work very closely with Transport and Main Roads whenever there are big infrastructure developments like new hospitals,” Ms Fentiman said.

“And as part of the detailed design that Multiplex Constructions have been successful in the tender for today, we’ll work very closely with TMR to make sure that local infrastructure, our roads, are fit for purpose given all of the infrastructure that is happening in this part of the world.”

The tender announcement was also welcomed by Sandip Kumar, Executive Director for Strategy and Transformation with the Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service.

“As we know the northern corridor of the Gold Coast is one of the fastest growing regions in Australia,” Mr Kumar said.

“We’re expecting around 200,000 people to live in this region, which is the size of a city like Townsville.

“We know the Coomera Hospital will support services delivered currently at Gold Coast University Hospital, at Robina Hospital, at Varsity Lakes, and the 404 beds will meet the needs of the population as it grows in the future.

“We welcome the Coomera Hospital build and we’re looking forward to 2027 when this facility opens.”
