A COAST village could soon be recognised as its own official suburb.
Gold Coast City Council Division 6 Cr Brooke Patterson and Division 7 Cr Ryan Bayldon-Lumsden have flagged plans for a petition to recognise Chirn Park as its own formal suburb.
The village is wedged between Labrador and Southport and boasts a deli, bakery, cafes, restaurants, pharmacist, liquor store, supermarket and more.
Cr Patterson said she was keen to see Chirn Park defined as its own area.
“Locals are very supportive of Chirn Park, so it’s always had good business,” she said.
“But at the same time, it really can do with a little bit of love and acknowledgment from the city.
“Cr Bayldon-Lumsden and I were looking at a petition to state government which we’re certainly hoping (Bonney MP) Sam O’Connor would present to parliament … looking to see if Chirn Park can be its own formal suburb.”
Mr O’Connor wants the council to explore better streetscaping and even fairy lights for the area to “build it up as a precinct”.
But he would support the move if a majority of residents wanted it, he said.
“I think the hardest thing would be picking those boundaries,” Mr O’Connor said.
“It has come up before, but it does get tricky when you try to define what is and what isn’t Chirn Park.”
A poll of 147 readers on Facebook and the Gold Coast Bulletin website found 126 were in favour of Chirn Park becoming an official suburb.
