Police conducting 'wanding' checks in Broadbeach

Police have released body cam footage showing officers confiscating knives from three men in Broadbeach over the weekend.

Two of the men were also allegedly found with dangerous drugs, while one appeared to try to run from police as they searched his belongings.

In the first case, police conducting ‘wanding’ patrols allegedly found a knife in a 49-year-old Banora Point man’s jumper on Surf Parade.

Officer also searched the man’s bag, allegedly finding methylamphetamine.

Police alleged that when they began searching his bag he attempted to run from the scene. Body cam footage appears to show officers following the man before quickly tackling him to the ground.

The 49-year-old has been charged with possessing dangerous drugs (exceed schedule 3 but not 4), possessing dangerous drugs, possess weapon, possess S4 medicine, obstruct police and two counts of possess drug utensils.

He was issued with a Police Banning Notice for the Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach Safe Night Precincts, and is expected to appear before Southport Magistrates Court on December 13.

In the second case, police who stopped a 27-year-old Teneriffe man on the Gold Coast Highway allegedly found he had a knife and a small quantity of methylamphetamine and drug utensils.

The 27-year-old man has been charged with possessing a knife in a public place, possessing dangerous drugs, possess drug utensils and possess property suspected of having been used in connection with the commission of a drug offence.

He was issued with a Police Banning Notice for the Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach Safe Night Precincts, and is expected to appear before Southport Magistrates Court on December 9.

The third man arrested, a 29-year-old from Coomera, was allegedly carrying a knife at a licensed premises on Surf Parade. He has been charged with possessing a knife in a public place, he is expected to appear before Southport Magistrates Court on December 20.

All three men were interecpeted by officers conducting patrols as part of a ‘wanding’ trial, which aims to get knives off the streets in Gold Coast party precincts by conducting searches using handheld metal detectors.
