A Gold Coast woman who allegedly assaulted a bus driver and an elderly fellow passenger after refusing to pay her fare has faced court for the first time.

Ava Marie Wiggins appeared in Southport Magistrates Court on Friday, facing one charge each of serious assault of a person over 60, assault occasioning bodily harm, and fare evasion.

Police allege the 22-year-old refused to pay her bus fee while on The Esplanade at Paradise Point on March 10.

Wiggins allegedly spat on the 51-year-old bus driver during the altercation before punching him in the face and arms.

It is further alleged that Wiggins also attacked an 85-year-old woman who tried to intervene.

Police say Wiggins was forcibly removed from the bus by the driver and restrained by several passengers until officers arrived at the scene.

The Hollywell woman was dressed in a grey hoodie and leggings for the brief mention of her case in court on Friday.

She avoided reporters waiting for comment outside the courthouse, quickly turning away and retreating inside after spotting media.

Wiggins’ case will return to court on May 9.
